i think the team will stay fairly similar, wagon at 5\8 as we will need the defense, i dont see witt or thorman being blooded in this game...grothe should be ok..i would swap vella for pearson two...

Stapleton is playing well but i still think that Grothe is the best signing we got by a mile. I think he will go very close to playing origin this season.
I agree Pazza. When I heard he was coming back to the Eels I was so chuffed! He's made a great start, so let's hope things go well for the young fella. :)

A good side Pazza with plenty of attacking options but yeah, I honestly can't see Smith moving Thorman to First Grade just yet. I'm not a fan of Hindy at lock either.

I think this is the side Smith will name, virtually the same side picked v Broncos barring injury to Hopkins:

1. Burt
2. Kativerata
3. Peterson
4. Vaealiki
5. Grothe
6. Wagon
7. Dykes
8. Cannings
9. Morris
10. Vella
11. Hindmarsh
12. Cayless
13. Hopkins (if fit, or else Stapleton)

14. Webster
15. Stapleton (or Pearson if Hopkins is unfit)
16. Peek
17. O'Dwyer

This would be my side:

1. Burt
2. Peterson
3. O'Dwyer
4. Vaealiki
5. Grothe
6. Morris
7. Dykes
8. Cannings
9. Hopkins (or Muspratt if Hopkins is unfit)
10. Stapleton
11. Hindmarsh
12. Cayless
13. Wagon

14. Webster
15. Vella
16. Peek
17. Armit

18. Pearson

Couple of Questions.

1. What did Kativerata do that was so wrong??? He dropped one ball, so did just about everyone else!

2. How come so many people think Thorman should be in the side, when so many of you have never seen him play in Australia? I am excited, and hopeful that he will turn out to be a fantastic 5/8th for us, but i am not going to say "he should be in the team", when i have never seen him, or at best seen 10 minutes of him in a trial, when a bloke who has played over 130 games for us in Wagon, is putting in 100%.

spot on PB.

Wise has not been particularly bad or particularly good yet - he's dropped a few balls, but as you have rightly said so have 75% of his teammates. He got caught out of position in defence a few times against the Bulldogs but much of that had to do with Jamie Lyon having a terribly off night inside him, and we now all know why Jamie was having a bad night so let's not re-visit that issue. I think what Smithy is trying to achieve in having Wise on one wing is to stop bigger stronger teams targetting our little guys. If we can have big blokes who can look after themselves everywhere except at halfback and fullback, then we can protect Dykesy and he can weave his magic when he can get his hands on the ball.

I'd love to see Thorman play, but surely its all a bit premature still? Wagon is doing nothing wrong.

I think we'll get the same side, except I'll throw O'Dwyer in at lock in place of Hopkins. He seems a good defender, and is quite more than 'mobile' enough.

On the bench, I'd go for the same as last week, though in place of O'Dwyer my choice would be Armit, though Pearson or even if fit Muckert may get a gig.

I think we'll run with three forwards of the bench and we'll take 'em on up the middle.

I would not be suprised to see Vella dropped. Seriously he played very poor again against Brisbane, and we have more than enough player putting their hand up for a go!
The precedent was set when Pearson was dropped last week. Although I don't think it will happen I would also not be suprised if it did.

I agree with eels2win BS side, but Peek may start in front of Vella.

PB I'm not the sort of person to complain for the sake of just complaining so i'll explain why I don't see Wise K as our best option on the wing.

1. From what I've seen he is quite slow for a winger and even slower turning around to chase. His reaction time is also poor.

2. He doesn't use his size to any great advantage and his size is one of the main reasons Smith has picked him.

3. His ball security is poor when running the ball back from a kick or from dummy half and he looks uncertain and a little clumsy cleaning up kicks.

Look he's not a bad player by any means, but Peterson and Grothe are our best options on the wing no questions asked. It seems as if Smith has moved Peterson into the centres to make way for this guy.

It's just my opinion, but I think he is the weakest link in our side at the moment. I really hope he proves me wrong though because you can see he is trying to give 100% all the time. I guess you can't blame a guy for trying but I just think he's out of his depth.

I dont mind Vella coming off the bench, even when playing well.

Seen him do some good stuff off the bench previously, given he is a bit quicker than most props, his extra speed could be quite usefull in helping us get a roll on against a tiring pack.

I agree fish eel. Vella is a great impact forward off the bench. With his speed and size he can really break a game apart when the opposition forwards start to tire. He seems to run out of puff too early when he starts. I'd like to see him come off the bench for us and let Stapleton start and do the dirty work in the first 15 or 20.

The Key to shutting down Newcastle is stopping their fowards, basically yeah johns is a great player and can hurt you but without his fowards getting a roll on he will struggle!

so what we need to do is get our pack to hammer into the likes of BK and Perry!

Vella off the bench could prove a smart move

Someone's gotta get in and get Johns whenever he can. The more they tease him, the more frustrated he gets. The more frustration, the more chance of him putting on a high shot= Penalty to Parramatta. :D

Wagon has always had big games against Johns. It will be interesting to see how well he plays on Saturday night against him.
