I think that your suggestions for the team name lack enthusiasm in combining the region I have heard many suggestions But I think the best one I have heard is the GoldCoast United Rugby league

As a former Gold Coastian living in Melbourne, I have to say that the majority of the names suggested for the new RL team are terrible - and I'm too far away to do anything about it!

Braves (racist), Trojans (condom brand)and Predators (police at schoolies) are particularly unfortunate, but others (Piranhas, Jaguars and Orcas) even struggle for relevance. And I have no idea what a Titan or a Ripper (do you mean a rip?) look like!

The Suns is a step in the right direction, and the Gladiators, Giants and Chargers have all been tried before...

Where's the Pirates??

Hi, another name that should have made your list was "Gold Coast HEAT" (see http://www.nba.com/heat/)All the others were very lame except for "Gladiators" & "piranhas". Who ever suggested "flat heads" should give themselves an uppercut (funny but why not then mullets!!) And the jersey colours should be red with black (like the north sydney bears use to wear! Now that would be very classy!

I submitted the name 'The Gold Coast Rip' as a suggestion for the Rugby League team. Of course I went on to say the crowd could yell 'go the rippers' but that was not my suggestion for the name, it was a vocal support scream that could be used!

My suggestion was The Gold Coast Rip... 'The Rip' for short.... like 'The Storm'. Variations of 'go the rippers', 'get ripped' etc, were part of the beauty of the name, nonetheless my suggestion was only 'The Gold Coast Rip' . If you amend that I would be grateful.

Also the sponsors can fit out the whole team also gives the ability to get into the kids brains as Brands like billabong have a huge following

Am I too late to suggest a name? Gold Coast Breakers. Suits the team colours of sand, sun, and water; Has an aggressive double meaning, and is representative of the coast (I used to live there for 10 years). Please consider it?

The Gold Coast Goannas. It's an Aussie name, and it hasn't been used before (not that i've heard of anyway).

I also reckon the new stadium should be called the Robina Arena.

I think the new Gold Coast rugby league team should be called the Gold Coast Gryphons or Griffins and wear Teal, Orange and White.

If you research the Gryphon/Griffin it is a mythological creature that represens the sun (The Gold Coast representing the Sun captial of Australia) and it loves gold (Gold Coast enough said).

It also has a legendary hatred of horses and horses are their favourite meal. Which is pretty meaningful when their local rival that will turn into one of rugby league's most intense rivalries is the Brisbane Broncos!

The Gryphon/Griffin has also featured on heraldry for centuries and it would make a classy, formitable and noble logo.

Moving away from the more commericalised trash that is dominating sport at the moment.

There are no other Gryphon/Griffin teams in the world either, the Gold Coast Gryphons would be unique.

It is half eagle and half lion and it is a massive beast that can go toe to toe with a dragon.

What more could you ask for. The Gold Coast would make a really fantastic looking classy and regal mascot.

Now that the Gold Coast has been admitted into the NRL i think they should be called the Gold Coast Vipers. The reason for this is because they are going to have that much bite in them when they run out for the first time in 2007.

The Gold Coast team should be called the Gold Coast Breakers. In reference to the sun, sand and most importantly surf that makes the Gold Coast so popular

My suggestion for the name of our new team is the "Gold Coast Stingrays"

I would like to suggest that the NRL team should be called Gold Coast Thunder. Using AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck' as the theme song (having 50,000 fans cheering 'thunder' will be be good for motivation) and having Thor the God of Thunder, complete with hammer, as the mascot solves all the marketing issues involved.

Obviously this bloke has never heard of the Melbourne Storm. Oh the ignorance... I LOVE IT!!!

Here are my tips for a name for our team. 1.The Shark nets, because nothing would get through the defence of the shark nets, except when we play the Cronulla Sharks, thay would simply run around us...
2. The Tube Riders or The Wave Riders.Maybe the Wave Riders as this includes all aspects of surf craft, eg; longboard, shortboard, goatboat, shark biscuit and body surfer. We are famouse for our surf.
3. The Cyclones. We get a few and thay produce good swell.
4. And the winner is my last pick but I need some help from your listeners. If there is a traditonal name eg; Aboriginal name for the Currumbin rocks this is my pick. Thay are a famous land mark on the Coast. And the marketing side would be good.

We like the name Gold Coast Cyclones.
It reflects the local weather conditions and implies power and 'unstopability'!

I have the following suggestions:

"Gold Coast Tourists" - identifies with area and lifestyle, makes spectators at away games think about the area our team comes from and promotes the Gold Coast as a tourist destination.

"waveBreak" - a local landmark which signifies protection, strength and solidarity and identifies our team with a local icon

"The Force" - may "The Force" be with you!

"The Banksia Men" - an icon in Australian folklore

Rationale: The Dart is an active, fast swimming, sub-tropical fish that is common in Gold Coast waters.
Of course, it is also a weapon and as a verb means to move or run swiftly.
All of the above will symbolise our new team. GO THE DARTS!

Hi I would just like to make a suggestion for the name for the potential new rugby leaguse team for the gold coast. They should be called the:

I think this name works on a number of levels.

The floral emblem for Gold Coast City is "Banksia Aemula Proteaceae". Aemula means: rival of.

"No sport without a competitor or national rugby league competition without a rival" Proverb.

The RED BOOTS would capture the firey nature of the Gold Coast, the Qld flavour and be a winning dominant colour. And a good pair of boots are an Aussie working class man thing.
Red boots would also be a strong image to merchandise.

Having already submitted this name to the consortium behind the bid, I'll post it here again:

The GOLD COAST IRONMEN is the nickname the region should adopt for their likely admission to the 2007 NRL Premiership.

It is strong and original, resonates with the local area like few other sporting nicknames in Australia do, and when you consider you can have TWO sets of cheerleaders (guys in budgie smugglers for the girls and girls in bikinis for the guys) it really is the best option.

I think that STRINGRAYS would be a great name definitaley not the Pirates....

would like to re-enter my suggestion as it seems to have been overlooked! I have heard that Titans, Pirtaes and Marlins are on a list of possibles already put forward to the bid team. Titans has to be the pick. Please see my evidence below.

Titans: "People of size and strength" "Considered to be even greater than the gods"

Pirates: "People that pillage and murder" "To commit Piracy is to steal and to commit crimes at sea". To Pirate is to copy or reproduce.

Marlins: Big Fish that get caught a lot.

I think that it goes without saying what they should be called.

My suggestion for a name is The Gold Coast SHINERS because it smacks of outstanding performance and also represents the sunshine
we enjoy almost every day of the year on the Gold Coast

The sea creatures that are in the bay next to where I live in Florida. Not particularly an Australian name but one certainly to replace Dolphins ... and it sounds good.

The name I'm submitting for the new team is GOLD COAST STUNNERS. I think the word Stunners evokes multiple examples of imagery which will be eminently marketable for the team destined to become the Gold Coast region's newest icon. Until recently, I was a long-term resident of Burleigh Heads and I do intend to become a full member of the new franchise as soon as it is established. Regards, Scott Law.

The logo for the team could be something like a wave from the surf, with a fist or an arm crashing through it either holding or crushing a football. The colour scheme could easily be adapted to stay the way it is now from the previous Dolphins name.

The cute Gremlins appeal to women and small children while the evil Gremlins appeal to the rest and would make an amazing logo with a Gremlin in headgear and ball under the arm. I am pretty sure the Bid Team is interested in this one. Hope you like it. It flows off the tongue well, "Gold Coast Gremlins" and a good name to chant and clap to. A close association with Warner Brothers Movie World could develop as well.

Unforunately this thread could not be able the trailor loads of abuse and ridicule they would have had the pleasure of receiving once they announced their top 20 list... ;-)
