Former Salford Red Devils owner Marwan Koukash is looking to set up a Liverpool-based rugby league franchise. After his failed takeover of Widnes Vikings, it appears the racehorse billionaire has turned his attention to Merseyside with the hope of building a successful league side in one of the world’s most famous cities. The venture has already attracted the interest of wealthy local businessmen Luke Backhouse and Andrew Mikhail, with Liverpool becoming more prominent in rugby league over recent years.
Following last year’s Test Match between England and New Zealand at Anfield, this year’s Magic Weekend will also be held at the venue giving the sport a major presence in the city. And to underline Koukash’s intent behind the project, a Liverpool RLFC Twitter page has already been created with a club badge and both home and away kits already designed.
One of the tweets by the new account states: “Liverpool RLFC will be built on solid financial foundations, with a CEO who cares for the club, real sponsors and one that treats its supporters with respect, not like a cash cow.” It remains to be seen what the next steps are for the project, but we certainly know that Koukash won’t be afraid to splash the cash in the hope of building a rugby league empire.
