I'm far from convinced by the branding and colours. It'll alienate a lot of potential fans from the get go.

Koukash among trio forming Liverpool team

Marwan Koukash has joined forces with two other wealthy businessmen in a pioneering bid to form a professional rugby league team in Liverpool – and take it all the way to the top, report League Weekly.

The former Salford Red Devils owner has partnered up with Liverpool-based property magnate Luke Backhouse and Andrew Mikhail, the founder of St Helens-based Mikhail Leisure The millionaire trio were behind a recent bid to take control of Widnes Vikings but no deal could be agreed. League Weekly claim that tentative talks have already been held with the Rugby Football League about admitting a new Liverpool team into the game’s semi-professional structure – and with Liverpool City Council over a possible new purpose-built stadium.

The new proposed stadium for Liverpool city fc would be perfect for any new Liverpool RL team.

With a capacity of 5000 a team owner hoping to have a successful super league side would soon be looking for a new stadium.
Prenton Park would probably be more suitable at 16,000.

If a Liverpool RL team ever came to be and did indeed reach super league let them first grow out of the stadium. London broncos play at a ground with a capacity of 3,000 and struggled to fill it last Sunday and that was with nearly 1,000 trinity fans.

Also Prenton Park isn’t in Liverpool.

London are being bankrolled by one man, the day he no longer does that they will no longer be a viable superleague side.
If they want to be a sustainable club that stadium wouldn’t cut it. I appreciate its not in Liverpool but I don’t think they could play at Anfield or Goodison, Liverpool womens and reserves play at Prenton so there’s certainly a peecident for it.
The good thing with Liverpool is I’m sure they would get a lot of away fans showing up from day 1. Watch your team and make a night of it in Liverpool.

Best bet would be to expand the 5,000 capacity stadium. Moving a Liverpool side to over the River Mersey would be a bad idea.

Yes it would but it wouldn’t be there ground and I don’t see Liverpool city really getting that big.

You never know. Just look at Salford city and FC united of Manchester.

Both play in grounds of around 5000 and whilst they get media coverage, they piggy back on the fan bases of Man United.
Many people love Salford because of the class of 92 links and the other is a fan club of man united fans and ex fans.
How much bigger they can get when their fans have a bigger primary team I’m not sure.

I think Salford could be playing in league 1 and maybe even the championship in 10 years time. Not so sure about FC united of Manchester. Either way if the demand was there for expanding the city of Liverpool ground then I don’t see why they wouldn’t.

Koukash and his fellow investors are apparently talking to Sefton council about building a ground for the proposed new Liverpool team in that area. They’re also hoping to be up and running for the 2021 season.

Again it’s all just talk at this stage and it’s marwan but it’s all potentially very exciting all the same. RL needs to target and gain a foothold professionally in the big cities in the north like Liverpool and Manchester while expanding their footprint in cities like Sheffield and Newcastle at the grassroots level i.e schools and junior clubs.

It’s always been a mystery why there hasn’t been a top league club in Liverpool. Why the sports m62 corridor finished at St. Helens is a strange one. Maybe too much competition from football? Sadly I very much doubt mad Marwan in is the man to take the game to the end of the corridor.

We’ll just have to wait and see but like you I’ll believe it when I see it.

The FC United fans were initially disgruntled Manchester United fans who didn’t like the direction they (Manchester United) had gone especially now that money is the be all and end all of the EPL. I wouldn’t say those fans’ still see Manchester United as their primary club. More like their secondary club now.

On a vaguely related note, read an old article yesterday that says the Manchester Rangers League One projected was ended due to expectations from the RFL that they take the Toronto model and self-fund?

Now I can understand why Toronto should self-fund, but why in gods name would you refuse a Manchester club the 20k or so quid they drip feed League One clubs?

PS just found this

RFL rejects Manchester League 1 application

The RFL has knocked back a bid by a Manchester-based amateur club to gain admission to League 1, despite the competition this season having been reduced to 11 clubs, following the adjustment of the leagues last season and the withdrawal of Hemel Stags in the close season, report League Express.

Manchester Rangers director Phil Fitton told League Express that the RFL suggested that the club take over another club or lodge a bond of £500,000, the same amount demanded of overseas clubs to participate in the Challenge Cup, although even then it wasn’t guaranteeing admission.

Talk is of the RFL completely doing away with any funding of league 1.
