NRL team for Logan?
A CLEVER business plan is set to be the backbone to a bold new bid for a Logan National Rugby League (NRL) team.
The revolutionary idea, which was imagined by former rugby league player and sports management consultant, Tony Priddle, would not only finance the team, but could also change the way we raise money for sporting clubs, community organisations and charities.
The Carbrook resident said he was confident, with enough community backing, the proposal would work and Logan would have its own team playing in the NRL by 2014.
He even went as far as envisioning the team winning the premiership in its first year in the competition.
My vision is we win the grand final in 2014, he said.
We're becoming a business by taking a concept that is making individuals wealthy and turning it into a community based project.
We won't have a Clive Palmer (Owner of Gold Coast's A-League club) to help us, so we want it to be really about grassroots - we want it to be Logan's team, we want it to be the people's team and they are going to help us fund it.
I've just got a vision of what I want to do and what I think we can achieve.
It's seriously about dollars and if we can raise enough dollars, we can do anything.
The idea was originally thought of to find another way for Queensland Cup side, Souths Logan Magpies, to raise money.
But then Priddle, who played seven years with St George and the Canterbury Bulldogs, approached former Logan Chamber of Commerce president and prominent local businessman, Bill Richards, with the idea of turning it into a bid for a Logan NRL team.
Bill and I got together to talk about an NRL team for Logan, because Logan doesn't have a voice - it doesn't really have a national identity, Priddle said.
We're like a little sister to Brisbane and the Gold Coast, but we don't want to be the little sister anymore and I think its one thing we can look at as a community and get behind it and build it from the ground up.
Richards said the team would also provide a direct pathway for aspiring rugby league players to the NRL.
This will be a feeder base for rugby league players, he said.
Some of the best players in this country come from down the road here, (most notably Cameron Smith and Israel Folau), so we want to promote that.
Priddle would not disclose how the business plan would function as it will be revealed in detail at an information evening on Tuesday, October 6.
The two-hour presentation will be held at Ellaways Music Auditorium at the corner of Compton and Ewing Road, Underwood, beginning at 6pm.
At the information evening, Priddle will outline all the details of the plan which he believes will allow Logan to one day host its own NRL team.
Internationally renowned heart health expert, Shane Stubbs, will also be attending to explain how the business strategy could also change the way heart health education is viewed in this country.
Priddle is hopeful of signing 250 foundation members to kick start the bid.
Only 250 places are available at the information evening so to book a seat or for more information contact Tony Priddle on 0418 279 925 or visit http://www.logannrlbid.com to book.
