Why can't we just have a 2nd "Brisbane" team playing out of Suncorp?

It's amazing how many people live in Brisbane and hate the Broncos.

If there is to be another SE Qld team it has to play out of suncorp stadium. It is the best RL stadium in the country and is underused.

Expansion teams should be placed to best serve Rugby League, not just to fill stadiums. We have a comp with a finite number of spots and only a certain amount of those can be allocated to SE Queensland. But do we really need a second team based out of Suncorp while areas such as Sunshine Coast (essentially Caboolture to Gympie) and West of Brisbane (Ipswich to Toowoomba) are left without teams? Brisbane city has a team, and it's (currently) the Broncos, like it or not. There are other areas in SE Qld that we as a game need to tap before we go back and start cutting up an existing market more finely.

Rule number one of national pro sports is you don't go starting new franchises where they'll cut into the market of an existing team. You put them where they'll grow the reach of the sport and lock out the competition (ie. AFL, Union, Soccer). Putting another team in Brisbane primarily to hurt those bastard Broncos or utilise one particular stadium just isn't the right motivation. Especially if it leaves an opening for a rival code to get in first on the Sunshine Coast or Toowoomba. This is a lesson we should already have learned. While we have teams treading on each other for the same territory and same dollar in Sydney, we leave the Central Coast open to the A-League.

None of this means we can't be creative about using a great venue like Suncorp. But rather than creating another Suncorp based side in direct competition to the Broncos, we should be treating Suncorp as a hub for blockbuster games across the wider region. Instead of another Brisbane city team, we should introduce two new franchises, one 70-100km north of Brisbane and one 70-100km west of Brisbane to go with the existing Titans based 100km south of Brisbane. If each of those three teams circling Brisbane played their six derby games against each other at the regional hub then there's an extra six 30,000+ crowds each year at Suncorp. Throw in one more high drawing home game from each of those three sides and you have 21 games at Suncorp each season.

But you don't just end up with a game in Brisbane city 7 out of every 8 weekends during the season. You also end up with 9 games on the Sunshine Coast, 9 games in Toowoomba and 9 games on the Gold Coast. Instead of ending up with teams in direct competition competing for the same fans and same dollar, we create teams that each have their own distinct market and sustainable support base. We cover the entire region, ensuring it's not just those fortunate enough to live in Brisbane city that have easy access to our game, while simultaneously leaving no area where rival codes can build a base without taking us on head to head.

For those Rugby League fans in Brisbane city who don't like the Broncos, they'd get a range of alternative games and alternative teams playing at Suncorp throughout the season. And for Rugby League fans in other parts of SE Queensland who find the trip to Brisbane city too far, there'd now be a local alternative. More games in Brisbane, more games at Suncorp, more accessibility to the game across the region and fewer openings for rival codes. It's win-win for Rugby League.

So why can't we just have a 2nd "Brisbane" team playing out of Suncorp? Because the game could achieve so much more by going elsewhere first.

Leigh.

+1 Agree. This would virtually guarantee a NRL game every weekend at Suncorp.

Ipswich or Redcliffe would be your best bets I think.

I doubt the city of Ipswich would be happy having their team based in Brisbane and would want their own stadium.

I want to see a second "Brisbane" team. There are multiple examples around the world of cities have two teams. e.g. Manchester United/Manchester City(EPL), L.A. Lakers/L.A. Clippers(NBA), New York Giants/New York Jets(NFL), NY Yankees/NY Mets(MLB) and Melbourne Victory/Melbourne Heart(A-League). I am sure Brisbane could handle it.

They would need to come up with a very different identity to make it a success without eating into Broncos success. Looking at Perth the success of teh Dockers has come from A) choosing a geographic centre that has a different demographic to existing teams demographics B) Creating a team in the natural geographic rivallary of a city (in Perth's case North/South River divide) C) Finding a group of fans that don;t feel represented by the existing team. Of course it helps if the existing team has sold out ground and your only option to see a live game is to follow the other team! In this way the Eagles kept their 43,000 members whilst the Dockers have been able to build a membership of 30,000+ despite their poor on field performance. Brisbane needs to find a way to do something similiar.

soccer league ru all use the stadium, a stadium that big can only hoast a certain amount of events due to the expected crowd figures i mean you wouldnt play souths logan vs easts, or gps vs wests regular season games there

yet both the jets and the giants are based out of jersey:lol:

I'd be less concerned about crowds and more concerned with how many Brisbane kids make it into the NRL. If you grow up in Brisbane and don't make it in the Broncos you're f**ked. Compare that to Sydney kids who have plenty of options.

There was an article a while ago about what regions gave us the most footballers and Brisbane was tbh quite sh*te. We need another team to provide pathways for players. The crowd and corporate support will be there, don't you worry.

if youre good enough you will get picked up by somebody, or you can go to qcup, brent webb was signed by the warriors from the qcup

Logan??? Oh I get it.

Someone is seriously taking the p!ss... This joke is almost as funny as the one I heard about the fuzzy wuzzy angles getting a team in a fully professional Rugby League competition.

Keep it for April 1st fella's, it'll be here soon.

I 100% agree with you.

As for Quidgey's drivel - consider that you should be able to double to annual gate at Suncorp with a second Brisbane side. If that isn't growing the game, I dunno what is?

What I'm suggesting would ultimately see games at Suncorp 21 out of 24 non bye rounds per season. And it would see 6 of 9 of those extra matches involving blockbuster derbies between SE Qld teams. But it would also see new teams placed and the majority of the games spread across the entire region, not just where those fortunate enough to live close to Suncorp can get to them. You can call it drivel if you like but the real difference is it constitutes a long term strategic plan for the game across the entire SE Qld region, not just a blinkered view concentrating growth around one venue that provides no plan for the game beyond the next television deal.

I agree with Quidgybo.

A second Brisbane city team is a stupid idea. Not AFL Western Sydney stupid, of course, but still very very low on a list of places I would have a new NRL club.

Perth
CC
SE QLD (not Brisbane)
Wellington

Would be my 4 spots to make a 20 team comp.

I like the fact PNG have thrown their hat in the ring, it takes balls.
BUT, money,....................
It talks, and bullsh*t walks.
The country has none as yet, if they fire up the old Bouganville mine then they will have plenty, hell the Bouganville mines annual output would surpass the NRL's entire bank balance 5 fold.
PNG though, needs to re-assess its priorities, if they get into the big show and don't have a sh*tload of imports then they are gonna get their arse kicked, week in, week out.
The country has an AIDS problem, don't dance around the issue, first priority is to get this sh*t under control, the health of the country's people is more important than a football team, by a long stretch.
Travel + Junior base?, travel can add up, as said if the copper mine cranks and starts getting product on the market then this will not be an issue, but if it doesn't then they don't have the dough, junior base, maybe it exists, but I think there top flite juniors may not be up to the required standard as yet, I am all for a sh*tload of scholarships though that bring the best and the brightest to Australia to give them time in a good junior system so they can then go back to PNG's first grade team and, over time, make them a genuinely competitive team capable of winning a competition.

Any organizing committee (two blokes) talking about a "scheme" that will finance the club but they can't release details yet, should be avoided at all costs. Gold Coast set the bench mark on how to be successful anything else will be a pipe dream at best.

I don't know Brisbane very well. But looking at Google Maps, if they base the new team in Willawong, It is 30 mins from Ipswich and Beenleigh, and 20 Minutes from Logan. It would also cover the South of Brisbane.

But first and foremost, WA and CC need to come in.

There is a 50000 seat stadium 5 mins down the road from Willawong at Sunnybank, so i doubt that Willawong has much of a change to get a new stadium.

The old ANZ Stadium?

It doesn't look like a proper League stadium.
