This is the best quote Ive ever seen about Channel Nine and the NRL and from an AFL journalist:

Because, with a free-to-air television ''partner'' that acts more as censor than propagandist, the NRL's light is hidden not so much under a bushel as a series of home shopping shows

Seriously living here in Melbourne, nobody knows anything about it, I even work with a ex-pat South African who would be more naturally inclined towards a Rugby code than AFL, but when I had to explain to him than NRL was the dominant code in QLD and NSW, much to his amazement.

Saying that league is in a "golden age" is gilding the lily somewhat. Might be some of that "childish awe" talking. Both the NRL and AFL have been treading water somewhat in recent years in terms of attendances and ratings, not growing nearly as much as the Australian population itself.

The truth is that the NRL's wounds from the SL war are only now, 15 years later, finally healing up. There is so much more potential in league than it is showing now.

Australia can not and should not have 3 oval ball football codes.Always thought there should be one Rugby code in the world hence there be one Rugby code in N.S.W. and QLD where club season and grand finals alongside state and internationals games would sh*t all over AFL or..... the VFL and NSWRL had merged to make the all australian game i from reading about the proposals it would of looked alot more like League then ping pong.

Good stuff!

I can seriously feel the tide turning. This year is the first year in a long time that press has got behind our game instead of tearing it down. I think GWS has finally forced us to unify and look to our common interests.

Once we get the I-Commission, a new TV deal and start expansion again. Watch out.

Masters' article yesterday was a real eye-opener about how the Winfield Cup was received overseas. We need to make sure we're using TV to drive interest in our game.

I truly think there is an opportunity in the next few years to firstly equalise our position with the AFL domestically and then slowly supplant Union as an international code, giving us an unrivalled 3 tiers of competition.

The big step on the road to recovery has already taken place, and it isn't the commission.

Channel 9's wounded hurt feelings about the new Mathew Johns show and the competition for media rights will give us more money, and a fair showing. The commission just has to keep the ball rolling.

Agreed. The more Nine complain about their 'competition' the better it is for the NRL. Go hard Seven!

Possible changes to the anti-siphoning legislation might help increase exposure if Nine is given the opportunity to show NRL matches on its digital channel. If not, the NRL should insist that Foxtel is given permission to show games live outside Queensland and NSW if Nine will not do so.

This should be a top priority.

The game was going great guns before Super League greed effectively put us back 20 years.

Yet there are still some fans (getting fewer by the minute!) who think Super League was good for the game in Australia, and who think News Ltd should be lauded for their "contribution".

Sonny Bill Williams pines to play the role of prodigal son or understand that, right now, boring and bankrupt rugby union is as cutting edge as dancing the Macarena.

True. The AFL owns Ettihad Stadium.
The NRL can't even get a $12mil loan to build their offices.

We need a gun CEO to generate the NRL's true value.

Or even people to understand that RL is not Australia wide nor much of a multi national sport and as great as RL is it will probably never be.

True value is realist terms relates to reducing player salaries, reducing the corporatisation of the game and bringing it back to the people.
You want bums on seats, don't waste money or go to SA or WA, just lower the price of family tickets and concentrate on the market that is the rugby league market.
