Aekins 5 - His usual self, but this time with an error.
Mansour 7 - Very strong from ol Sauce. A couple of big runs and good moments defensively.
Crichton 8 - His usual self in attack but notable improvement defensively. Made some sweet tackles.
May 8 - Not surprised he's making a good centre. One glorious pass a game is the norm atm.
Naden 8 - Good game. Outstanding work for his try.
Luai 8 - Another great game. Skillful and very strong defensively
Cleary 9 - Keeps getting better. Some incredible kicking, notably that monster when when we were camped in our own 30 in the second half.
Tamou 7 - Good first stint in particular.
Api 8 - Great work for Martin's try. Difficult to pick.
JFH 8 - Monster as always.
Kikau 9 - Showed that smarmy soap dodging grub who's Daddy. Wish he got in his face after steamrolling him for a try.
Martin 6 - Ran some good lines but had a bit of those oopsies he'd gotten out of his game.
Yeo 7 - Another very good game. Love his new style of play.

Tetevano 6 - Some good runs and tackles but his work for their first was very poor.
Leota 7 - Big energy.
Leinu 7 - More big energy.
Laurie 5 - Didn't get much time but showed a few glimpses.

May has really outdone himself tonight that pass to nado was bulletlike, also Apis backward dart to switch and put martin in was brilliant,
Defence was pretty good, both tries from CNK were held up, but benefit of the doubt really went against us,
All fowards killed it 2nite, i suggest Big Fish have a pregame speech before every game for the rest of his playing days.... well done panthers

Aekins 5 (His usual game but his error led to a try but evens out with his good)

Mansour 8 (close to his best this year. Said to the wife he looked like 2016 Sauce)

Crichton 8 (getting better defensively)

May 8 (no better utility in the game with some sweet passes)

Naden 8 (Getting better defensively and had to work for his try)

Luai 9 (working well with the left and not really making any mistakes)

Cleary 10 (best 7 in the comp right now)

Tamou 7 (usual reliable self. Hope someone offers him huge money for retirement as he's earned it)

Koroisau 9 (buy of the year is no contest)

Fisher-Harris 8 (great game for his 100th)

Kikau 8 (gave it to Bateman who beat him last year)

Martin 6 (mix of good with errors. Big fan)

Yeo 9 :)heart::heart_eyes:)

Leniu 6
Leota 7
Tetevano 6
Laurie 5 (wasn't sure how to rate with limited minutes but never looked out of his depth.)

This was a really tough game, Canberra came to play hard and fast and started furiously. But this Panther's team is made of stern stuff and in spite of not having the ball for the first six minutes, weathered the onslaught and didn't flinch. Once again the forwards out shone a highly rated pack that many consider to be one of the best in the competition. A couple of points:
  • I just can't praise our forwards highly enough. Canberra could just not get going without help from the ref. Canberra had only two forwards who run for 100m plus, Papali and Lui. The Panthers had 5 and Tetavano run for 99m!;
  • The interchange puzzle continues with Leniu only given 14 minutes. With the forwards involved in heavy clashes in the second half it made sense to leave Leniu on much longer. When he is on he consistently delivers 9m or 10m runs. The forward pack is purring along nicely, let's not burn it out;
  • I am always puzzled how a team can lead 24 nil at half time, clearly dominating the game and yet still lose the penalty count. Ivan was right to query the penalties, in spite of what Annersley said about the calls being correct. There would be hundreds of tackles in a game where a tackled players arm touches the floor in a wrestle and they continue to try and improve their position and a second player joins the tackle to stop them advancing. The ref eventually calls held and play continues, nothing to see here. To penalise Martin because Rapana's arm touched the floor is ridiculous and is an example of where the ref's don't have a feel for the game. Martin couldn't possibly know Rapana's arm had touched the ground, he just saw him trying to turn his body to pass the ball and the tackle was still moving. Technically correct? Yes. The right decision? No. That said, Ivan should not have said what he did.
The criticism of Aekins has got out of hand, painting him as a third rate loser. Yet there he is, doing his job delivering 133m per game, the 10th best in the NRL, a whole 4m a game behind Dylan Edwards. He is equal first in the NRL for kick return metres per game at 63m. He is equal 5th for taking 1 person hit ups, so he doesn't mind doing the tough stuff and getting bashed.

His effective tackle percentage has him sat above the likes of Ponga, Tedesco, garrick. DWZ and Dufty. In 8 games he has made 4 errors. Trbojevic, Holmes and Moylan have made more errors in fewer games. He has let in 4 tries and above him are many players including Trbojevic, Holmes and Hopoate that have let in the same or more tries with fewer games.

Is he a brilliant attacker? No and he doesn't rate well compared to other fullbacks when it comes to involvement in tries. He is a good offloader (9th in the NRL), but he seems to spend his time distributing the ball as part of a chain of passes. This is borne out by the number of possessions he gets per game which puts him at 10th in the NRL. This obviously frustrates people because he isn't creating anything. Mind you, he doesn't have to. The rest of the team are creating plenty and he just needs to give the ball to players who are better at it than he is. Job done. For all we know he has been instructed to shovel the ball out to the other players.

I wish he was Tedesco like in attack, but he isn't, but he is a better all round player than many other fullbacks in first grade. Most importantly,in our team what he brings to the table is effective in helping us win. He locks up the back, gives us plenty of metres to help start our sets and the other backs deliver the tries.

The expectations of the 2020 Panthers are now so high that now when they win, they still get criticised. That is a good thing. Mediocrity is the enemy of good. That said, I thought the performance of the team in this win was meh.They looked flat and tired and did enough to win and that was it. A couple of points:

  • The forwards just did what they do every week and dominated the opposition pack. Other than Harris and Tevaga, the Warrior's forwards were owned. We are talking metres in the 60 to 70m range per player. By way of context, James Tamou belted out 195m on his own. The Panther's had 50% more running metres than the Warriors. 50%! That is why there are no excuses for the lacklustre display from the halves. They were given the perfect platform to build on;
  • The halves really didn't play well and made that game much harder than it needed to be. It was like Barrett never actually coached the attack and we looked like the Panther's of old, unable to score inside the red zone in spite of repeat sets. I put that down to two reasons:
  • Cleary was playing well with himself and other than the nice pass for the Naden try, he just cruised. Only 7 tackles and no tackles breaks, smacks of a player running on empty. He just lacked his usual energy and zest. He also hogged the ball and reverted to "turn it inside to player x" in attack so often you could be forgiven for thinking we were still in 2019. To his credit, his kicking was still good and he created repeat sets and helped build pressure. It's just that when he had the ball, he did very little with it;
  • The Warriors had incredible line speed. By the time the first receiver had the ball, the Warriors were already up on the gain laine. It shut May's ball playing down and he had a quiet game as a result. It is a credit to our forwards that in spite of that we still trundled down the field to gain a dominant field position. This is where you need your halves to reorganise the attack better, put more kicks behind the rushing line, set the backline even deeper. We continued to be flat and repeatedly turned the ball inside as if expecting it to eventually work. The fast line speed is exactly what we will get off the Roosters, Eels and Storm, so we better have a look at this performance and work out a plan B and C, because plan A will not work;
  • Considering the conditions and the fact we were playing badly, you still have to commend the effort of the team. It will be our ability to adapt to a fast moving defence line that will be the deciding factor in whether we can go all the way this year, not a lack of effort or committment.
