Luke Keary had a good impact off the bench a good interchange with Adam is the correct way to go leaving Sutton at 5/8. However he needs to have more minutes on the field maybe against Canberra.

Keary, Sutton could be Souths future

South Sydney fans may have got a glimpse of the near future when Luke Keary stepped on the paddock in the 65th minute against Parramatta and helped lay an immediate platform for the Rabbitohs win.
With Souths leading 16-12 at Pirtek Stadium and the round 19 Rise for Alex fixture still in the balance, Keary laid on the Rabbitohs third try of the night with his first touch of the Steeden to set the visitors on course for their 32-12 victory.
With Adam Reynolds sidelined and Keary partnering John Sutton in the halves the Bunnies piled on 16 points in the last 15 minutes.
Rumour has it Reynolds is under some pressure at Redfern and Keary's effort will only add fuel to that speculation.
"He (Keary) came on and provided a lot of energy and provided some great play for us so I have a great blend with the three boys," Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire said.
"I have some great combinations to move forward with.
"I'm pretty open with John we have some good discussions about how we want to move forward with the team.
"With John at six he provides a real steadiness with how we are as a team.
"The forwards feed off him moving forward and we have had a lot of success with him at six.
"So we have got opportunities where we can push him into the back-row if need be.
"But at the moment I am pretty comfortable with how Sutton is playing at six and obviously with Adam and Luke there it provides us with some good options."
Maguire had planned to play Reynolds and Keary in the halves this year but a pre-season injury at the Auckland Nines to Keary put paid to that.
Keary played his first NRL game of the year in the Rabbitohs poor round 17 loss to the Titans. But the bye weekend gave Souths plenty of time to work on their combinations.
"I thought he (Luke) brought some extra spark to the team, we did wear them down and he provided that spark and a pinpoint kick," Sutton said.
"We just have to keep evolving with those combinations."

Don't know about having Keary and Reynolds rotating halves on the i/c.

Think it has to be one or the other in the finals.

The last 20 minutes of the game were pretty telling compared to the first 60.

I reckon Madge will continue with either Keary or Reynolds on the bench to cover for an injury in the halves or if we get a few injuries in the back row he may need to move Sutton to finish a game there. Anyone know how Reddy is with his injury? We will probably need him next week because it looks like Lote will be suspended.

No fair comparison, you had a fresh player, with a bit of spark come on when everyone was busted, and make some pretty good plays. I am sure if it was the other way round Reynolds would have made the same impact.

Keary is very promising but no better than Reynolds!!!

Adam's form this year has been way down on his last 2 years. Madge got all the boys working hard in the bye week and i'm sure he would have worked on what Adam needed to improve on just like the rest of the team. The other night like in previous games Adam has not got us enough repeat sets, kicking straight to opposition and not finding the grass enough and his running game and a bit of hesitance in his passing game which slows our attack. Lets hope Adam can work harder to improve his game because we would all like to see him playing great again.

South Sydney halfback Adam Reynolds is keen for a clear-the-air meeting with coach Michael Maguire after being hooked when the game was on the line against Parramatta on Friday night.
Reynolds was replaced by interchange half Luke Keary with 15 minutes to go, the latter sealing the win with a pinpoint kick with his first touch of the football.
Maguire has indicated his desire to leave John Sutton at five-eighth, raising questions about the roles to be played by Reynolds and Keary in the run to the finals and beyond.
Reynolds has been a mainstay during the Rabbitohs resurgence, leading them to within one game of the grand final two years in a row.

However, there is a belief that livewire Keary is the man to help the team take the next step and break the most famous premiership drought in the game.
Given Issac Luke played the entire match at hooker without a break, it remains to be seen whether Maguire can afford to carry a specialist half on the bench long-term.
Reynolds admitted he was frustrated at being subbed off and was keen to broach the subject with Maguire in coming days.
"I'm a bit disappointed. But if that's what needs to be done for the team, that's what needs to be done," Reynolds said.
"I would like to talk to him about it. I would have liked to have stayed on. He's just trying to do what's best for the team.
"The team is bigger than me and I can only do what I can do. Hopefully, I can sit down and talk to Madge and see what the plan is."
Reynolds said he was unsure how the three playmakers would be used for the remainder of the season.
"I'm not sure, I haven't really touched base with Madge on it, It's up to him, whatever he wants to do," he said. "It's his team. I'm willing to put my hand up and do what's best for the team.
"A lot of the younger boys are putting pressure on the older boys, the more experienced players. It is bringing out the best in some of our blokes. It is a good challenge."
Reynolds remains under contract until the end of 2015 but the return of Keary from injury, coupled with the signing of Melbourne young gun Cody Walker, has clouded his long-term future.
Keary said he was happy to bide his time on the bench as he continues to build match fitness following a long stint on the sidelines.
"Obviously you want to be playing 80 minutes but I haven't played much footy this year, so I'll happy to have that role to come on as a bit of an X-factor," he said.
"I'm only four games back from injury and I'm mainly there to bring on energy. It's a bit hard to play structure at the end of the game ... a good time to bring on some fresh legs with a bit of speed, mix it up with the big boys in the middle."
There will be plenty of intrigue over the composition of South Sydney's team to take on Canberra next week. With Penrith-bound hooker Api Koroisau dropped from the side, Keary could also cover for Luke if required.
"It's not frustrating, it's just the job I've got off the bench," Keary said.
"If something goes wrong during the game, any injuries, I'll come on. If not, I'm happy to bide my time there."

I think that Reynolds needs a few weeks to let his knee recover fully, during this time we can see if the Sutton/Keary combination will work (I think it will). It might also be the spark that Reynolds needs to find his best form again.

Sadly I think Reynolds is on the outer. Keary and Cody Walker will be the halves, with Sutton at 13.

South Sydney coach Michael Maguire moves to extend contract of Adam Reynolds

Paul Crawley
The Daily Telegraph
July 21, 2014 12:00AM

SOUTH Sydney coach Michael Maguire has initiated talks to extend Adam Reynolds? future at the Rabbitohs despite growing speculation the halfback is on the outer.

Young playmaker Luke Keary replaced Reynolds with 15 minutes to go in Friday night?s win over Parramatta and Keary set up a vital try with his first touch.

The decision to bench Reynolds and allow Keary to partner skipper John Sutton in the halves was seen as significant and only intensified talk that Reynolds? position in the team is under threat.

Matty Johns said on Triple M on Sunday that he believes Maguire has now come to the conclusion that he would soon have to choose between either Reynolds and Keary and leave Sutton at five-eighth.

But Reynolds? manager Steve Gillis revealed he spoke to Maguire recently and it was the coach who indicated the halfback?s future was well and truly safe.

?We have had a discussion with Madge who has indicated he would like to initiate negotiations going forward,? Gillis said.

?We have had zero contact with any other club, that has never been discussed.

?In fact, Souths have recently come to us saying they would like to extend his contract. And that process will gain momentum in the next couple of weeks.?

There have been rumours that Souths had already approached rivals about shifting Reynolds next year.

Asked if that was the case, Gillis added: ?Never. Never. People have suggested that he has been shopped to other clubs which is contrary to the rules. You need permission to negotiate for players under contract and it has never happened. It is not true.

?Madge has sat with me a couple of times and said: ?I don?t know where it comes from, I don?t know anything about it, he is a vital member of this organisation?.?

Asked if Reynolds was concerned about his future, Gillis said: ?All the discussions I have had with Adam, he has never said once that he was disheartened by any of the speculation that he may be on the outer.

?He knows what the coaching staff think of him and he is comfortable with where things are at.?

But it still remains to be seen just how Maguire will juggle his three halves for the rest of this season and going into next year after the coach all but conceded on Friday night that Souths were at their best when Sutton was playing five-eighth.

Speaking on Triple M, Johns said both Reynolds and Keary offered different strengths ? but in the end it would come down to one.
The reason why (Reynolds) came in and just made a great fist of first grade straight away is the fact that he hasn?t got, and I mean this is the nicest possible way, he hasn?t got lots of things in his game to get right,? Johns said.

?He is a bloke who is very composed, he pushes the team around the park and he puts the ball in the corner very well as well as being a hell of a goal kicker.

?Keary has a little bit more there, he has a bit more ball playing, bit more spark, bit more footwork ... so it has taken Keary a little bit longer to really find his game at first-grade level.

?But now he is starting to.?

Johns believes Maguire will be forced to make a choice.

?He is leaving Sutton at five-eighth, it has got to be Reynolds or Keary,? Johns said. ?That is what conclusion (Maguire) has come to.?

And what about Cody Walker? I don't care what they say. They have 4 halves! Reynolds, Keary, Cody Walker and Sutton. Do the math. 2 / 4 = 0.5. OK, so maybe you push Sutton to the forwards. You've still got 3 halves. And all of them too good to be playing NSW cup. One way or another, someone is going to get pushed out.

Simples

it is called backup / depth. Storm had Cody as a backup , and still did not play him when Cooper was injured. At the moment Souths have NO other decent halves backup , other than Api (hooker) and he is moving to panthers.

Souths will have Keary and Reynolds with Sutton in the forwards. If any of the three are injured /rep games , Cody comes in. If Cody is a standout and the other three are playing well , Walker is an option for the bench to cover halves/hooker.

If Cody , Keary , Reynolds all play like super players in 2015 , perhaps one will move in 2016. A good problem for 2015 in any case.

Cody was being groomed for 1st grade at the Storm. They were really pissed off when Souths stole him. He's an axe. Ultimately I think he will force his way in. It's good to have depth, but in the playoff for a halves spot Reynolds is the one most likely to miss out,, unless he gets a lot better.

Don't know anything at all about Cody. Tell me, when do you think he will make I it to first grade?

Next year I'd say. Whether he becomes a starting half probably depends on how Souths do this year.

On the subject of Keary, he really has a great opportunity to prove that he belongs in first grade over the next few weeks.

If he and Reynolds can combine well, I think you will find that we won't see Sutton at 6 again.

This is the moment that we've all been waiting for. Now we finally see if he sinks or swims.

Absolutely, Keary has a golden opportunity here, hope he is able to grab it with both hands - just what Souths need.

Boy oh boy oh boy, look at the speed in the backline, hard to match I think. Can't recall to many backlines as fast although we need one more winger and bingo, unbeatable.:):):)
