Luke Lewis primed to snare Origin 5/8

QUEENSLAND built an Origin dynasty on a five-eighth named Lewis and now NSW selectors are preparing to follow their lead and hand the Blues No. 6 jersey to the King's namesake.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that in-form Penrith Mr Fix-It Luke Lewis has bolted into contention for the NSW five-eighth spot - a position most considered a two-horse race between Canberra's Terry Campese and Newcastle's Jarrod Mullen.

After enjoying a stranglehold on the jersey for much of this year, Campese now requires a massive performance against the Warriors this Sunday to make his Origin debut.

Panthers centre Michael Jennings also needs an 11th-hour form boom after cruelling his chances with two missed tackles on Cronulla's Ben Pomeroy last weekend.

Campese's deteriorating form for the 14th-placed Green Machine has seen the Raiders pivot slump to third in line behind Mullen and now Lewis, who had been primarily viewed as a bench utility.

But senior figures in the NSW camp now believe Lewis has the all-round game to complement former Panthers teammate Peter Wallace at halfback.
The Dally M medal co-leader's 100kg presence is a major feather in his cap, with the Blues' brains trust mindful of shutting down Queensland playmaking talismen Darren Lockyer and Johnathan Thurston.

Given he was chosen as 18th man for Australia in the Anzac Test, Lewis is all but assured of state selection despite the fact he didn't feature in the City-Country trial two weeks ago.

With Craig Wing now favoured to fill the bench spot because of the Rabbitoh's ability to cover for hooker, a place must be found for Lewis.
In his favour over Mullen, Lewis will also have an extra 80 minutes to impress this weekend. The NSW team will be chosen before Newcastle's clash against North Queensland on Monday night, meaning that Mullen can do no more to push his claims.

Knights winger James McManus - fighting for a spot against David Williams, Jarryd Hayne and Joel Monaghan - is in the same boat, along with Cowboys back-row enforcer Luke O'Donnell.

NSW chairman of selectors Bob McCarthy last night said the unusual Monday night gathering came at the request of Blues coach Craig Bellamy, who wants the entire team in Melbourne for camp the following morning.
"Had we waited until Tuesday to name the team like we usually do, they wouldn't have gotten to Melbourne until Wednesday," McCarthy said. "It was one of the changes Craig wanted."

McCarthy acknowledged the panel would have no choice but to take into account form from this weekend, putting Mullen, McManus and O'Donnell at a slight disadvantage. "But we've watched every game over the first nine weeks and you could say the team is 95 per cent settled," he added.

LMAO, Lewis is nowhere near good enough to be a starting 5/8 in Origin. Great news for Queensland

WTF?

He should be in the team, but not at 5/8. He has to play in the centres, at lock or on the bench in a utility role.

Im glad even a Pathers fan can appreciate this. Ive watched alot of Panthers games and while I rate Lewis as a superb player, hes not a great 5/8 and should only be in the NSW team in the positions youve mentioned. The only reason I give this the slightest chance of working is because Farah is such a dominant hooker who takes ALOT of pressure off the halves. Thats said, I still give it next to no chance of working.

Someone has to be having a lend surely?!

there is no way luke lewis can play 5/8 at origin level.Hell he isnt even up to first grade standard as a 5/8.

That said he should be the NSW lock. If not at least on the bench.

Well thinking about it a bit further, the worst part of him playing in the halves for the Panthers was his kicking game. If Robbie Farah and Peter Wallace did all the kicking, and Kurt Gidley chimed in every now and then.... it might work out ok.

Basically it's only worthwhile if you have him playing as a second lock. But it would still be far more effective to use Jarrod Mullen at 5/8, and have Luke Lewis playing elsewhere.

If he is named at 6 he will be there for defence. In attack you would imagine Gidley and Wing(when on the field) will be playing alot of 5/8 in attack.

This has been tried before and failed miserably when NSW picked Bird, Anasta and to a lesser extent Timmins at 5/8. Lewis is not the answer.

I wouldn't go as far to say that it failed miserably...there was mixed success, no doubt...Bird and Timmins have had their moments...we could do a lot worse than Lewis, but in saying that we can also do a lot better.

We're screwed. I actually thought we had a chance, Lewis at five eight?
Matt Cooper is a a certainty after hearing Daley sing his praises.
Josh Perry could be starting front rower along with Kite!!!! WTF
This team gets smashed so what do we do next year?

because he plays for the Raiders

same reason they don't pick Allan Tongue as lock and captain

/skeepe

its true. campese won't be there. he is not as talented as people think. tongue is the nicest guy you'll ever meet, but there are simply better players than him. and monaghan is just out of favour against hayne. plus why would you want a stupid ginge playing on your team?

monaghan in blues 2008 = losers
monaghan in kangaroos 2008 = losers
monaghan in raiders 2009 = losers

If we had him and cooper in the centers at least we know they could stop an onslaught of points being scored.
