LU's Favourite TV Show - Countdown

I can't see how a show with on 62 episodes can be #1.
What goes on inside your head? I've never seen anyone make so many stupid comments across so many different subjects. It's mind boggling.

There are plenty of arguments for why Breaking Bad might not be the greatest show of all time, but being on TV for only 62 episodes is not one of them.

What Bulldog Force is too stupid to realise is that Breaking Bad is 62 episodes that are generally 40+ minutes long.

Seinfeld for example had about 170 odd episodes of 20 minutes and put Breaking Bad in to 20 minute episodes it becomes 124 episodes.

Fawlty Towers is often considered the greatest comedy of all time (by those with taste), and it only ran for 12 episodes. 12 episodes of pure comedic genius

Two and a half men is often considered the greatest comedy of all time (by only you), and it ran for 241 episodes. 241 episodes of pure vomit.

The true great tv shows know when to end on a high

I actually liked Fawlty Towers, every episode I saw, but I wouldn't classify it the greatest ever.

Yes, you are

And since I know how predictably stupid you are and your next response will be "but not any more *insert gay wink here*" I'll address that by saying I don't care whether you hate the show post-Sheen's meltdown, it was once your favourite show and you're a fan of the Charlie Sheen era hence your television opinion is irrelevant.
It never was my favorite show. I liked it, correct, but it was never my favorite. And I'm not a fan of it anymore ;-)

I always liked Rules of Engagement better to be honest, and I wouldn't even rate that show too highly!

The next countdown had better feature more True Detective and House of Cards. I might even split it into comedies and drama, just to avoid a cartoon beating a beloved drama.

It's an interesting match-up. I think they get a bit envious of one another and try to outdo the other's latest performance.

Yeah, when I was thinking about what my list would entail, I felt that the two genres were too different to compare, in a way. It was much easier when splitting them up.

Drama I'd probably go

Sopranos or The Wire
Breaking Bad

Then comedy

Simpsons
South Park
Seinfeld

etc, but found it incredibly hard to blend them together.

The shield was pretty awesome.

Also season 1 of Prison Break was good, then it went kinda shit.

A few shows out there at the moment I would like to give more time. I like the idea of Almost Human, but needs more time to develop.

Also Angel back in the day was awesome. Used to watch it every week. Anyone remember 'Now and Again' ...wish they renewed that, I really enjoyed it and the cliffhanger ending to this day annoys me.

with the way television is going most TV lists anywhere will be mostly made up of Drama's before too long IMO. Comedies nowadays are rubbish (bar a few) but there are some cracking dramas out there. Obviously the oldies like Seinfeld and Simpsons wont be forgotten.

And i just dont see how a comedy, no matter how funny, can keep up with an intense well written drama which usually treats the audience with comedic moments anyway, i.e GoT or BB. Just IMO.

That's kind of what I was getting at by agreeing we may need to split it up next time, or you take the courtesy of splitting it up for us and we name more than 15. These epic drama series are almost worthy of a new classification of their own, or if they aren't now they will be soon as more and more come along.

I mean realistically if you're considering everything objectively, acting, production values etc, regular TV shows just won't come anywhere near these epic drama series... but purely for entertainment purposes nothing will beat The Simpsons in its prime for me.

The Simpsons in it's prime produced about 200 episodes of top shelf quality entertainment. There are very few TV shows that can come near to that. If we are looking at writing then The Simpsons absolutely deserves it's place. Those ~200 episodes are better written than most dramas on this list imo.

Could have done worse with the #1 that's for sure
I think it just finishing relatively close to the time these votes were made had a bit of a boost for it. Great show nonetheless.

Here is the list of LU's favourite TV shows versus the rankings on IMDB. IMDB's rating is in bold and shows marked (*) have more than ranking probably due to different seasons or other reasons. I have taken the highest ranking.

1. Breaking Bad - 2
2. The Simpsons - 25
3. South Park - 41
4. The Sopranos - 9
5. The Wire - 6
6. Games of Thrones - 4
7. Seinfeld - 27
8. Community - 95
10. Faulty Towers - 42
10. The Office (UK) - 79
12. The Walking Dead - 72
12. Band of Brothers - no ranking - see below
13. MASH - 153
14. Peep Show - 92
16. Arrested Development - 12
16. Twilight Zone - 34
17. Chapelle's Show - 60
17. Black Adder - 35 *
18. Sons of Anarchy - 70
20. Monty Python's Flying Circus - 28
20. Dr Who - 40 *
21. Deadwood - 37
22. Get Smart - 195
23. Modern Family - 96
24. Curb Your Enthusiasm - 57
26. The IT Crowd - 118
26. The Shield - 52
28. Futurama - 74 *
28. The X-Files - 66
30. Friends - 23
30. Whose Line Is It Anyway - 69 *

You will notice that Band of Brothers does not have a ranking. Apparently, IMDB considers it a mini series rather than a TV show. It has a ranking of 9.6 which is equal to Breaking Bad so in theory, it would be ranked either 1st, 2nd or 3rd if included in the TV shows list.

What is no.1 on IMDB? Do documentary series count? The World at War and Planet Earth are the only other shows I've seen with a 9.5+ on there that I can remember.

Pretty sure Breaking Bad fanboys down voted The Wire on there so Breaking Bad would rank higher. There was a thing about it on the net I read awhile ago lol. (Or it could have been Game of Thrones..)
The Wire was 9.7 for a long time before.

Yeah The Wire was no.1 for ages. Game of Thrones was 9.3 not too long ago.
Take out the fanboys and the IMDB system is pretty good. As it is too many fanboys vote 1 or 10 without even seeing something.

Documentaries do count. The current No. 1 is "Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey" and no. 3 is "Planet Earth".

A couple of weeks ago, "Breaking Bad" was No. 1 - that's why I check the list every so often.
