Carney's the one to top in mix for the six

Todd Carney has one hand on Jamie Soward's NSW No.6 jersey.
The pair will square-off in the battle for the Blues five-eighth jumper, quite possibly in front of NSW coach Ricky Stuart, at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night when St George Illawarra goes head to head with Cronulla.
Fairfax understands Soward is at long odds to retain his position in the Country and NSW team, with Carney the front-runner in a five-man race which also includes Canberra's Terry Campese, the Warriors' James Maloney and the Knights' Jarrod Mullen, all eligible to represent Country against City in Mudgee on April 22.

This weekend will be pivotal in the battle for the NSW No.6 jersey, not only with Carney and Soward going toe-to-toe on Saturday night, but with Campese and Maloney clashing at Canberra Stadium the following afternoon.
But the position is Carney's to lose, and this Saturday night's match-up against Soward could well determine whether he finally breaks into the Origin arena after threatening to do so in previous seasons.
''I'm not sure yet which games I'll physically be at this weekend,'' Stuart said.
''But you can be sure that wherever I am I'll be watching the Sharks-Dragons game. It should be a high-quality game and Todd Carney and Jamie Soward are two key players who will have a lot to play for, at club level and beyond that.''
After this weekend's match the Sharks are scheduled to play the Eels next Sunday afternoon, a couple of hours before the Country team is announced, which will be determined before Carney takes the field.
Soward next week has the luxury of playing two nights before the Country team is named on April 15, but it's unlikely to count for much.
Stuart met with Country coach Laurie Daley a fortnight ago to discuss the players in the frame for selection, which NSW Origin manager Trent Barrett believes will dictate the make-up of the Blues side.
''Whoever gets picked in the City-Country game is going to be a fair indicator as to who Ricky is going to be looking at,'' Barrett said.
''You'd like to get all of them in if you could because it will be a genuine trial for the Origin game. Fingers crossed we can get them through to mid-May without injury.''
Carney, who made his Test debut for the Kangaroos in 2010, has many things working in his favour, including the backing of Sharks teammate and NSW skipper Paul Gallen, who is very close with Stuart having played under him at Cronulla.
Also in Carney's favour is his combination with former Roosters teammate Mitchell Pearce, who is expected to retain his position at halfback.

I mean what the f**k seriously, Soward has done nothing wrong and is the incumbent yet here we go again, out of favour. As much as i love Soward to remain with us and not play origin id love to see him become a legend of origin as well. But theyll keep out of form Mitchell Pearce. go figure.

Soward and Carney should be the 6 and the 7 for NSW with Maloney a dark horse.

If NSW had decent selectors I believe they would of at least won ONE series out of the last 6. Still can't believe they picked Pearce in game 3 in 08.

On pure talent Carney is the obvious choice but when you take form (Soward has been just as good imo) and the fact Soward played well in last years origin you'd THINK Soward would have the upper hand.

Doesn't matter though. Will be good for the Dragons. Hopefully no Dragon players get selected...

I personally don't give a flying, and pray Soward doesn't get picked.

But this article is good. Hopefully Jamie reads it, and fires up enough to outshine Todd Redemption Carney this week. Redemption has never really troubled our defence. I fondly recall his feeble sideways attempts in the 2010 grand final

don't you just love the position the queenslanders are in - barring injuries and a few retirements, they could virtually name their side for the next 3 years from today.

I reallly hate this rationale everybody seems to be using on the Origin forum.

Pearce is gonna be picked based on being the best player in NSW to wear #7. This will mean 3 of Campese, Carney, Soward & Maloney will miss out.

The difference in the modern game between halfback & 5/8th is one stands at the scrum, the other doesn't - that's it. Their role in the team is entirely circumstantial.

You think Honrby is a possibility? Firstly he has retired for rep football but if he hadn't, he may be ok as a utility playing off the bench but as a halfback, I wouldn't have him in the Dragons top 17.

Its always an interesting discussion (and its always wise to avoid the origin forum lol).
I think that's true in a sense (although I would suggest the feeding of scrums is also largely irrelevant - many 6's do that too). But in most cases the two halves (and, in many, the hooker) are a unit, and coaches look for balance in that unit. You need a play-caller, a primary kicker, a distributor tight in the ruck, a field marshall, a playmaker, a lateral runner... among other things. Some of the qualities both players will have, some will be the domain of just one. Coaches need them all ticked off though. Generally speaking, your 7 is the tight distributor within the forwards, and your 'field marshall', directing the team into position. If you're looking at a combinations, many of the qualities the 6's lack are where the 7's excel. A player like Soward, although a good marshal, needs a good tight distributor at 7, eg someone like Hornby or Pearce. Carney is purely about play-calling and play-making, so needs a half who can take care of the rest.

i dont wanna see Sowy picked either and ive a feeling they will go with Maloney or Carney at 6 anyway, xcept if Maloney plays like he did v Easts

always makes me laugh when Campo gets mentioned as a SOO player, good solid hot/cold clubby thats all he is

it wont matter tho' as long as Qld have JT and Cronk to call on NSW have got Buckleys

NSW change the halves every year and I won't be suprised if the drop Soward. He has done nothing wrong but will be in the same shoes as Campese, Mullen, Anasta, Wallace, etc. The NSW selectors are a joke and should stick with last years team like the Queenslanders do. They only drop players if they are injured or retired. No wonder they have won 6 straight. Soward has played more finals footy than any No.6 for NSW in the last 3 years, plus a world club challenge. For big game experience, he has plenty. Wallace would be next on the list as he has played alot of Finals footy.

We saw how Carney went in the 2010 GF against Soward. And hopefully we will see that again this weekend I hope. Soward is probably having his best season so far.

Wallace has been in career best form wouldn't be out of place.

Yeah, I think he is almost back to his pre-knee surgery form. Has always been good defensively, but I think he has regained a little of his running game and is relishing the responsibility post Lockyer.
