Final whistle for Mander
December 8, 2005

TIM Mander has announced his retirement from refereeing but will remain with the NRL in 2006 as a video referee.

The 44-year-old refereed the past two grand finals and was named the referee of the year at the 2005 international Golden Boot awards recently. Mander said he was ready to focus on his career in the Christian ministry as well as remaining close to the game of rugby league.

To be honest, no great loss. He was past his best.

there was talk about it all thru 2005. Will be a big loss. Mander and Harrigan gone within 2 yrs.
Simpkins is not up to the job as the #1 ref.

Sh*t.

Jason Robinson needs to step up quickly, he's the only decent one around at the moment. Jenny needs to be chanelled up to the NRL too.

Tim Mander was alright, he was the no.1 referee.

Now that he's retired, there is no no.1 ref, cause all the rest are sh*tt. Except for Robinson who doesnt get a go.

One of the better referees in his generation, and certainly better than the current mob.

One of his biggest problems, as a Queenslander, was that he didn't want to be seen as being biased towards the Maroons, Broncos and Cowboys. So, often, he would referee them more strictly and end up being biased against them.

I suppose Simpkins is now the #1 referee...I still can't get past him not giving the Cowboys a penalty in the final seconds of the 2004 preliminary final when Minichello knocked the ball into an offisde Chris Walker, instead ordering a scrum that had no time to form. Call me bitter and twisted, but he's blotted his copybook in my eyes after that! :)

Sad to see Mander go, although at times made some silly calls more often then not made the right calls and unlike referees today didn't make calls that altered the game.

Simpkins as top referee? No thanks. Seriously Simpkins cost the Cowboys a chance of making the grand final in 2004 and nearly did it again in 2005. He didn't have the balls to send Carl Webb into the sin bin after what he did to Bailey not once but twice and sending off Morley for a tackle that wasn't that bad.

Good
The amount of times he f**ked the Warriors over was laaughable. Still leaves a huge void in the ref ranks. Him and Bill gone in 2 years. who will be number 1 come round 1

We carry chips for the lot of em. We don't discriminate.

Mander & Simpkins were the top refs IMO, and Daylight third. Mander's absence is gonna be a big hole to fill.

Black isn't good enough....saw him cost the Cook Islanders the game (And eventually the series) against NZ Maori's......As well as plenty of other mistakes.

Does this mean more Shayne Hayne?!?!?!?!?
