Winger Manu Vatuvei was tonight ruled out of the Vodafone Warriors’ first NRL finals campaign since 2003.
The giant 21-year-old won’t play again this season after partially dislocating the patella and suffering posterior cruciate ligament damage in his right leg.
Team doctor John Mayhew said while the injuries were season-ending, Vatuvei probably wouldn’t require surgery.
Vatuvei was forced from the field early in the second half of Saturday night’s last regular season clash against Penrith, a match the Vodafone Warriors went on to win 24-20 to secure fourth spot and a home play-off against Parramatta at Mt Smart Stadium this Friday night.
Vatuvei, who had scored 10 tries in 23 appearances this season, was devastated to learn his season was over.
“It’s disappointing because I was really looking forwarded to playing in the finals for the first time,” he said.
“All I can do now is to give the boys as much support as I can from now on.
“I’ve got to stay positive and do everything I can to recover and be ready for next year. Hopefully there’ll be other chances to play in the finals.”
Vodafone Warriors coach Ivan Cleary was resigned to losing Vatuvei after he was injured on Saturday night.
“It didn’t look too good at the time,” he said.
“Obviously it’s another blow for us coming after Jerome (Ropati) had his season ended last week and we also had to do without Ruben (Wiki) against Penrith.”
Cleary will name his side tomorrow for the first of the 2007 play-offs against the Eels.
Meanwhile, about 15,000 tickets have been sold for the match so far. They were available only to Vodafone Warriors season members yesterday and today but about 14,000 tickets will go on sale to the general public from 9.00am tomorrow.
