I still maintain that if player A is getting offers of 300k a season, but wants to play at a club that can only offer him 150k a season then there is nothing wrong with him taking less to play for whatever team he wants.​

As a Tigers fan I welcome this news. Gasnier scored tries against us for fun, the bloke literally raped us everytime we played the Dragons. Something like over 20 odd tries in about 10 games.

There's nothing untoward happening here unless Gasnier keeps getting paid after he retires, in which case it should still count under the cap.

What will be cheating, but unfortunately still legal, is if Gasnier's playing contract (counted under the salary cap) is replaced with a coaching contract (which is not counted under the cap). Kind of like how Darren Lockyer has been playing for the Broncos for peanuts because he'll be compensated with a fat coaching contract after he retires. It might be cheating, but it's not illegal.

And the guy who said players are allowed to play for less than their market value is correct. The only exception is that players aren't allowed to renegoiate the terms of existing contracts unless the new contract is also an extension. That's why the Storm players couldn't just take pay cuts.

Very well summed up, and some of the hyperbole on here is paranoia in the extreme. He's not the player he was circa 2004-2008, but still a good centre leaving perhaps a year too early which is better than leaving a year too late.

I did get stuck into him from the stands at a Dragons/Storm just when the union rumours started, bellowing out out "HEY GASNIER! - Boy for sale!" every time he came near our corner of the ground. After roughly 60 minutes of this, he stopped (I was wearing the golden '05 jersey that stood out a mile amongst the purple) and glared up into the stands at me... and I had nothing.

The worst thing is that I was rescued by the piles of chuckling Storm fans around me when they all pointed and roared laughing at him when he finally looked into the stands. Shame. Shame. Shame....:lol:
