Doubt this will free up much cash for the Dragons as they're hoping. They'll probably have to pay out some of his remaining contract anyway.

I'm a little confused. It's his choice to retire. Why would his contract be paid out?
Well we don't know the details of the agreement. It might be that they agreed to pay out a portion of his remaining contract for him to go now. That would make more sense than him leaving something like 1 million dollars on the table.

They must've come to a buyout agreement and are spinning as Gaz retiring.

Because if his contract was heavily backended he could have a claim to at least average out his contract so he doesn't miss out on whatever cash he was promised for this season and last season as part of a settlement.

the contract to my knowledge will be averaged out but even assuming that shoudl free up around 300k from gaz and there was another 300k from boyd as well Dragons will definetly have coin for good signings

This seems odd. I felt like he had more in him.

I guess he's achieved all he can and wants to spend some time with family but I'm still very surprised.

A few people can see it but most can't.

Spaznier is only retiring cause he'll take up too much of the cap next year. It is extremely likely he'll be back on a minimal contract like Rogers next year. The NRL should make sure that:
1. His remaining contract is counted under the Dragons salary cap next year, regardless of if he plays or not, since it is backended.
2. He never plays again.

FMD.....can you get any more stupid? What grounds have the NRL got to ban him from ever playing the game again? And how can you count money into the cap for a guy who isn't even registered to play for that club?

This is a special situation. He is retiring cause he knows he'll be paid much more than he's worth next year, and take too much of the cap. He'll likely try and get back into the team during the origin period for a minimal contract equal to 2010.

I think there should be an investigation into this, the legitimacy of the Dragons is now severely corrupted, especially since he said he had no intentions of playing past this year at the beginning of the season.

What's stopping any team signing a close-to-retirement player on a 4 year minimal $50,000 backeneded contract, and making them retire after 2 years?

Yep, I agree. The NRL should strip the Dragons of their 2010 title & award it to the team that lost the grand final. Do you know who that was ?
