Mark Gasnier to retire...

This is a special situation. He is retiring cause he knows he'll be paid much more than he's worth next year, and take too much of the cap. He'll likely try and get back into the team during the origin period for a minimal contract equal to 2010.
And he told you this himself....did he? Wouldn't your little rant and sob have more cred if you waited til then to say it?

Thats not what I'm saying. I'm saying that the deceived the salary cap by signing a star player on a minimal contract and now he's retiring, the punishment should be that the Dragons must honour his contract and it must come under the salary cap

and @fingerbang, it has credit cause I know exactly what the Dragons are planning to do. They should be punished for this.

I think there should be an investigation into this, the legitimacy of the Dragons is now severely corrupted, especially since he said he had no intentions of playing past this year at the beginning of the season.

What's stopping any team signing a close-to-retirement player on a 4 year minimal $50,000 backeneded contract, and making them retire after 2 years?

Cry more.

How do you know he never had intentions of playing the 4 years when he signed the contract last year? He is still getting his worth for this year, and possibly more than the contracted amount for this year. Things happen, and circumstances change. Everything was signed sealed and delivered above board, approved by your Ian Schubert....you can't turn around now and say it is a rort. Even if he did come back next year during origin, the contract has to be approved by the NRL again. Nothing illegal in what is done or happening.

I'll ask again....how do you know exactly what the Dragons are planning to do in 2012?

As for the OP...

Massive shame Gaz is retiring, has always been one of my favourite players at the Dragons and despite coming back halfway through the year, was a big part of our premiership surge.

Has won SOO series', played tests for the Roos' and now has a premiership and WCC to his name.

One of the best centres in the world when on song and hopefully we can farewell him with a premiership this season.

The best part of this all is Spaznier admitting he has no Dragons heart  Along with having no NSW heart or Aus heart
Not having your heart and head in it is different to having no heart. Looked like he had plenty of heart and hunger last October. Maybe if Brian Smith and his Roosters players found some heart and hunger and pride in their team, they might achieve half of what Gaz has....and also retire happy and satisfied.

Can't wait till we pick him up for $1 for 6 games next origin series. The cries on here will be priceless. Sad to see him go, but he would have been the highest paid player on the team so not such a bad thing.

Gee Spaz has terminated his second contract with the Stinking Folded and Merged Stains.

At least Fathead Ferguson only walked on one contract with the Sharks.

Love how the Stains supporters are all teary eyed over Spaz retiring. Comments like he is too old now, to slow, past it, blah blah blah.

How many years did he have left on his (laughs loudly) contract.

What about all the poor bastards that were forced to find another club because of the Cap. Left so that Spaz could be accommodated under the ceiling. Luckily for the Stains Mr Gallop and Schuey allowed this rort/contract to go ahead. A pie and $2.67 for the first year, then backended. WOW and coming so close after the Storm Rorters were accidently uncovered.

Gee all those players that left must be feeling great right now. And what about Spaz's other center partner. Coops, he must be feeling great right now. But hang on he is older than Spaz. Getting slower now ...

There were a few of us in here that laughingly predicted this very thing to happen. I just hope that Spaz has a pleasant time back in gay-paree playing yawnion and leaping over the sacks of euros.

Sydney city roosters...
Seriously though, didn't filter play for less than his value during his final years?
Because of the storm debacle the nrl has been goin a bit strict on 'the value of players' without regard to what the player wants...this is the very definition of heart

The $50k deal to come back mid season last year stunk , but it stinks even more now . Was bearable to a degree when the dragons had to then accommodate a marquee signing for 3 years at overs money ...but the deal has exposed a massive loophole now .NRL should act . I put it that he was never going to play for the full "contract" and he ,his manager and Doust "knew" it . Something is not right that he would walk away from $1.2 million ++ for a couple of fading years . This deal must be investigated imo .
