Ponga 2 linebreaks, 22 runs for 254m last night so can't say he's not trying. Very likely he'll be QLD fullback so our game next week against the Panthers is going to be interesting.

He tried yesterday because he wants to play for QLD.

I think he wants to win for Newcastle. He is just playing in a god awful team. We have the worst pack and halves in the comp.

We have a few good players (Sharpe, Best, Gagai) who are battling the same circumstances but try their guts out every single game.

We’re not in the 80s anymore where there was one coach that was responsible for every single thing. It’s a whole coaching team. I’ve heard people go as far as saying Blake Green isn’t allowed to coach the way he wants to, or AOB didn’t coach the team at all in 2023 it was all Green and McDermott, it’s all bullshit.

The head is obviously at the top of it all, has most of the media commitments, the man management, instilling values and team selections. While they can advise the type of football they want the side to play it’s usually the assistants running the actual attacking structures.

I’m really keen to see the back of AOB but Green’s got to go with him. Anyone that thinks that we’re suddenly going to turn it around just removing AOB and replacing him with McDermott and then leaving Green as the attack coach is nuts. That’s not even going into the issues with roster.

I think McDermott is the logical choice to be installed as caretaker in the meantime. He has overseen at least the only part of our game that has worked over the past however many years. A new head coach inevitably comes with new staff as they bring their own people in. McDermott can apply for the role and obviously gets a chance to put himself in the shop window early by coaching the year out, but should apply like any other coach for the job and be considered an equal applicant with no favours.

That's my take anyway. Green absolutely has to go with O'Brien and McDermott too if he isn't the best option after running the ruler over the options.

Totally agree. I’m fine with McDermott being caretaker because somebody needs to be. Watch us appoint Green though if AOB’s sacked on Monday.

To be honest I’m just excited to hear about the possible board meeting on Monday that we might actually see the back of AOB. I don’t want to get my hopes up though.

Would take the “board meeting” chatter with a liberal helping of salt.

Best suggestion I have seen is Billy Slater. The kids want to play for legends of the game. He would at least carry some clout with recruiting. Very much doubt he would come here though.

The only reason sacking AOB now makes any sense is it looks like this sad sack of a playing group is checking out on him.

Whoever else comes in is still going to have no middles, a bunch of injuries and no halves to deal with... So we'll still suck.

Doubt is so generous.

Not sure what Slater has done to walk into a club gig. His tactics and bench rotation in last year's Origin was a shambles.

Slater showed last year that as soon as he's put under a little bit of pressure, his guard went up, got defensive, and collapsed under the pressure. And that was after only one comment from his opposition coach. How would he go in week-to-week footy? Maybe not so well.

We need someone who fosters an "us against the world". We need our own Ricky Stuart. Slater didn't play here, but can see he would be a similar sort of character in that way.

Only bloke who possibly fits that bill for our club is Matty Johns, but why would he walk away from what he is doing for ... this.
