I don’t buy the narrative that being proud of the team effort = accepting mediocrity.

Surely it’s much worse if they’re phoning it in every week, which they’re not.
At the end of the day your team is playing against another team of professional footy players. Some teams really good, some teams really bad, some in the middle. Sometimes the other team is better and your team plays great but loses anyway. Sometimes your team plays shit but wins because the other team sucks so much. Being happy about playing shit and beating a shit team is accepting mediocrity way more than pride in a good performance in a loss to a good team is.

So just to clarify, are you agreeing with me? Or disagreeing?

Few other thoughts as I watch the halftime dross.

1. Woosh is correct, Gags is a much better captain than KP. He's not the only one in the squad.

Desire wasn’t where Newcastle were going to fall short today.
I thought both Leo and KPP ran as hard as I’ve ever seen them run.
It’s a shame they haven’t brought this level of intent more often.
Friz also had his best game of the year.
If this level of intent becomes the norm, and you throw in Ponga, Sharpe, Brown, Lucas, and a new coach, then 2026 could be promising.

Yes, but it feels like about 3 years go by between seasons for our squad. By March next year we'll have forgotten we ever played together again.

Maybe I'm a bit dead inside with the season already over etc but I felt more sorry for the players after that one than us. It was just so typical of our luck lately. No question we were the better side even if the execution wasn't there. Better goalkicking and finishing off even one of those chances in the first half would have been enough.

No question we fell away in the last 15 mins though (understandable with the illnesses etc), and that combined with the ridiculous luck of the Warriors in that period (can captains challenge please just fk off), it just wasn't meant to be.

It's also annoying because a win there would have all but guaranteed we don't get the spoon. This team certainly doesn't deserve that.

Feel awful for the lads. Great effort. Not one Newcastle fan would be unhappy with that performance.

I keep telling the guys at work that I turned the game off after they missed the penalty goal, so as far as I know, we won. If only.

Yeah me too. Not worrying about 2 points definitely took a lot of sting out of the actual loss but I mainly feel bad for the players. I don’t hate this current crop at all, and would be hard to see them get a spoon.

People talk about Ponga wasting his best years at Newcastle, but Fifita is twice as bad. Imagine him in a setting like Melbourne- he’d be unstoppable.
