Not the way I recall, McGregor stating, "he just thought Dufty was looking a little tired", & no I don't think Field is better than Dufty nor do I think Dufty is better than Field, neither of them would be in my side purely on defence (lack of ) issues, It doesn't matter how fast you are at scoring try's, if you let in 2 for every try you scored then you might as well keep rotating to find a suitable player for that position.
In my opinion, things to work on, as you mentioned, were diabolical & bordered on trying to look like he was beaten in defence instead of missing a tackle [Bulldogs game]. Either way, every time the opposition target him in defence they would be confident of scoring.
In comparison, yes I watched most of the ISP when on the screen, Field suffers from a poor technique, in arm grabbing instead of making sure his shoulder is the first point of contact.
Cheers.
Blind Freddie.
Ps
I wonder what Bennett would think about Dufty being a better FB than Widdop. Did you watch any of the World Cup?
Perhaps corey plays 14 duty stays at 1 halves stay same after 20 or so min hunt moves to 9 and corey comes on in the 7 same rotation 2nd half like this idea but feel sorry for the promising Robson who knows what will happen

No Freddie you recall wrong....Dufty approached him says he has been feeling tired for a weeks including whilst playing. Mary acknowledged that after the Dogs game during the week before the last round hit out. Now what really happened behind close doors..your guess is as good as mine. And wht di MR HPU do about it if that wa the case.

Anyway enough history.........
Yes and I have acknowledged elsewhere that Widdop could be but he has hardly done at it at NRL week in week out that I have seen. A couple of games in World Cup against opposition just put together except for Australia not enough to convince me when comparing to the NRL for a whole season. Dufty may have a shocker against the Dogs but so did a lot of others including the coach

To play fb you must be one of the fittest players in the team.
You also need to be durable.
Widdop said so when asked at the world cup .
He was tired playing fb in the world cup.
I think that if norman hit the ground running and is fit he will play fb.
One thing for sure widdop and hunt will play 6 and 7.
Its great to have option and it will be a good year.

Widdop has already indicated his preference to leave at the end of 2019. Yes maybe he will change his mind however, I'm sure both parties are working on the assumption he will leave at season's end.

It makes more sense to me for Norman and Hunt to begin their partnership in the 2019 season mainly because if things go wrong the switch can be made mid season and if thing go well, their combination will be all that much better for it in 2020.

Are not trying to win in 2019? When norman eventually moves to the 6 transition will be easier because he has already been in the team playing fullback or wherever hopefully and he and hunt have a history playing together.

The paper have said widdop is leaving 2019.
It is not offical.
He may but that is a just what they say.
Widdop will play 6 hunt will play 7 at least to start the season.
They will be times when they move.
With certain plays ect.
But that is where they will start.

Robson will get plenty of so called bench time due to injury and SOO. He will have plenty of time to show what he can do at NRL level.

Ok .. compare Duffy’s stats vs top 8 and bottom 8 teams and it’s an easy conclusion to make on him

Better option is to hop the NFL fails and chase Holmes for 2020

Dufty can leave

Dragons fullback Matt Dufty ready to last the distance in 2019

Matt Dufty’s legs failed him.

His trademark speed was gone as the St George Illawarra fullback struggled with the week-to-week grind of the NRL.

Dufty had never run for so many metres before becoming just one of 20 players to break 3000 running metres for the year.

Coach Paul McGregor knew he was battling and had a frank conversation with Dufty ahead of St George Illawarra’s round 24 clash against Canterbury.

“I was feeling run down,” Dufty said.

“My legs were dead. My body was pretty fatigued. (McGregor) gave me the option of sitting out for the week or playing off the bench and I said I wanted to play off the bench. No-one wants to not play footy.

“My calves and legs (were struggling). I was doing that much running my body wasn’t used to it. Twenty three weeks of doing K’s and K’s — a lot of running just caught up with me.

“It hasn’t happened before. You can’t compare 20s or NSW Cup to first grade. You can’t clock off for a second because you’re going to get burnt. I found that out last season.”

The Dragons modified Dufty’s training program in a bid to have him firing for the back end of the year. But he has approached this pre-season with a different mindset to ensure his body can last the distance in 2019.

“They kept me off the field a bit more and let me freshen up,” Dufty said.

“It showed towards the end of the year because I was playing the footy I wanted to play.

“I’ve just had a long break. I wanted to get in and train as hard as I can and prove to the coaching staff and all the players I want that position back and cement that fullback spot for 2019. Maybe closer to the year I’m not sure what the coaching staff will do. But at the moment I’m training 100 per cent.

“I’m training a lot better than I was last year. I’m feeling a lot better. When your mind tells you your body is sore and you can’t do it, it’s just a lie. You can do it if you really want to. That’s what I’ve been working on. It’s really been pushing me.”

After featuring in all of the Dragons’ final seven matches last year Dufty had a goal of playing 80 per cent of games in 2018. He was just one of five players to feature in all 26 games this year.

“As a whole I was pretty happy,” Dufty said.

“For the start of the year the first eight rounds were pretty easy. You’re playing footy again so that’s outstanding. It’s just in that middle bit when your Origin boys aren’t there. It’s a different feel when your whole team is not there but that’s where players like myself who aren’t playing Origin need to step up and keep playing good footy.

“(I need to improve on) effort areas off the ball and catching the ball on the full. All the things good fullbacks do. They are easy fixes, just a mindset shift.”

The off-contract local St George junior had to deal with uncertainty at the start of pre-season when he was linked with a move away from the club.

Dufty reached out to Dragons assistant coach Ben Hornby before meeting with McGregor the following day.

“I wasn’t used to it,” Dufty said.

“It’s something new. I only saw it when it got sent to me by friends and family about 100 times. That’s when I called Benny and spoke to him.

“I talked to (McGregor) the next day and he said; ‘he is definitely not releasing me for 2019’.”
