Im tipping Dufty to have a much better time of it this year..its early days into 2021 I know but hes improved under the high balls thus far from what Ive seen, so thats a start.....Hook needs to work on his positional play now and his timing when and where to chime into the backline....lets be honest hes never going to be your last line of defence like a Graham Eadie or Changa Langlands or a kick return specialist like Gary Jack or Billy Slater, but if Griffin can instill some smarts and confidence into his game he has the ability to be a match winner......theres not much of him I know but Les Johns from Canterbury Bankstown was built very similar and he was a bloody fantastic full back
There is no mistaking that Dufty has great attacking skills. Looking at his several highlights reels on YouTube shows that he has that acceleration needed to make a break and either score or pass to a support player to score.
When the highball is kicked to him particularly with the attacking team in our red zone, he does tend to fumble the ball when he leaps to catch it. When the opposition kicks the highball from their half, Dufty has the time to take the ball comfortably and from that moment should take the ball back as quickly as possible.
His last line of defence isn't the best but his cover defence is quite good. There aren't too many fullbacks of Dufty's size able to stop a rampaging 110kg forward so close to the line.
Provided he scores more tries in a game than having tries scored against his defence, I'll be happy.

Dufty needs to have a good look at Papps tonite....similar in stature and speed.....just wants the ball in his hands
Exactly. Papps has been coached so well. The whole team is and everything is executed with utmost speed. That's the beauty of the Storm and their coaching of the players is second to none. They can lose Cameron Smith, Cronk, Slater etc but they manage to get players to perform in a way that it's like they have a rigid system in place to follow and every player they get adapts to it so well.

They lose Jason Ryles to England Rugby and get back Stephen Kearney, who as an assistant is great - not so as a head coach though. They also are playing without Harry Grant and Dale Finucane so they are going to be the bench mark again in 2021 in my opinion.

Not only does Dufty have to look at how Papps plays, and Papps is nearly in every move in attack, but Hook & Co need to study closely the way the Storm players execute everything and try to emulate the methods.

Sorry for rambling on.

Getting back on topic and that is Matt Dufty., I say that if Dufty played for the Storm, he would also be killing it. Can you imagine how many tries he would score and set up. I wouldn't worry about his defence if you have the Storm's forwards to do most of it anyway.

He’s about on par speed wise maybe a hair slower but a better passing game. He’d kill it under Bellamy.

People always say how good dufty would go under a coach like Bellamy but l question how long would Bellamy tolerate Dufty's poor defence and effort at times before moving on and developing someone else?

I've always admired Dufty's skills and flair in attack but so often groned when he missed a tackle that led to a try or let a ball bounce when he could have caught it on the full.

For me Dufty is not a fulback. When watching the game betwen Souths and the Storm last night, it confirmed in my mind that he just does not come close. The fullbacks on display showed me that we need to find a replacement for Dufty.

I'd say that if given the opportunity, Dufty would be a good five-eight however, he would have to improve his defensive skills and his kicking game.

In my opinion it will not take long before Ramsey is given the number one jumper.

Possum I get it that Dufty isn’t at the level of Papenhazen or Mitchell.

Mitchell at times is dodgy under the high ball and I saw him drop one cold last night.

Dufty is a reasonable defender and not nearly as bad as some promote. Yes like all full backs on a ‘short cross field scramble’ after a line break can be side stepped. I saw both Duff and Cody miss in the charity shield in that situation. They do look bad but usually the genuine miss was back in the defensive line.
Duff isn’t as good as Paps, Teddy, AJBrimson, Mitchell but swings and roundabouts the rest.

For 2021, at least the foreseeable part Dufty is clearly our best fullback

hedoes not get rag dolled any more tha other small FB’s these days... huge improvement over last12 months.

still some development needed under higher ball, and defence isn’t near as far behind others as you think.

guys like Ramsey are not ready yet.

For this year and subject to how he trends in 2021, Matt Dufty should be resigned by the Dragons. Out of the fullbacks we currently have in our stocks, he has the experience moreso than any other and I'm thinking that he will shine for us (as our song goes after a victory).

He will stand out in Sunday's game - score a try and set up a couple. That's what I'm hoping anyway and it will be up to the other bigger guys to hold out the Sharks from scoring more than us.

We might be lacking forwards on paper but with the right strategy and game plan and with the aid of Soward's coaching in the kicking department for Clune and Hunt, we will be in the game for sure.

I suppose part of this post should be on the Round 1 v Sharks thread, but oh well!

Bellamy would also note what defence lapses happened by others to put Dufty in that position. As we put our players through the microscope we sometimes dont realise that most opposition players are not world beaters. What they have is confidence, confidence in the system, culture & the club in general. This is something that Webb, Hook & co have been entrusted to build after 10 years of neglect.

Sure, a lot of players would be looked at with poor defensive effort. Still, Bellamy likes players that work hard and Dufty is not known for his work ethic

And further on Dufty....built a lot like Pappa and both have speed to burn....unfortunately doesnt have the Melbourne go forward in front of him but needs to get his hands on the ball more.....the more your involved in the game the more your confidence grows
Watching Papp's warm up the other night and seeing how hard he hit and tried to burst through the man holding the tackling aids showed he is willing to run through a brick wall. Very gutsy player.

Even little men with dynamic speed and lightening acceleration can push through the big boppers best efforts to stop them and Papp's uses that to his fullest advantage as he leaves the opposition guessing as to what he might do.

Dufty 's 1st instinct is to run around, slice through a gap or try to outpace the defence which means he is easier to predict and good coaches can limit his effect against their teams. In fairness his improved passing game has added a good dimension to his attack but there is so much more he can do ball in hand IMO.

You have to marvel at the Storm system and Bellamy's amazing ability to keep his players so focussed, level headed, diligent to the tasks they have been assigned and it is clearly apparent that "air heads" never last long under his wing.

As i said OT Papps buit very much like Dufty (actually Duf is 3 kgs heavier)....and your right when he runs hes determined to run through a brick wall not round it as are all the Storm outfit....unlike our mob that would struggle to run through Glad Wrap

For mine Dufty doesn’t like contact in either defence or attack. He’d be a lot more effective if he challenged the line himself & got a quick play the ball. Other teams know he’ll pass before the line or try to run around defences. Also I don’t like his voluntary tackles on kick returns.

Let's all have a good look tomorrow at Dufty's:
  • Line breaks
  • Line break assists
  • Tries
  • Try assists
  • Errors in attack
  • Tackle count
  • Missed tackles
  • Defensive errors
  • Times out of position
  • Tries let in
  • High balls caught on the full
  • High balls not caught on the full
  • Kick return metres
  • Metres run
  • Intercept attempts (thanks _snafu_)
Just write numbers against the above dot points and then compare the above figures to the other round 1 fullbacks. This is the only way we can get a true handle on Dufty's positive/negative impact in round 1.

These days I have enough trouble just following the play so, I know that I would not be able to produce accurate figures with regards to the above. However, if some of you on here are willing to do this, I think it would be very much appreciated by me and other forum members.
