Attitude has always been Dufty’s issue. When he’s on he’s dynamite but when he isn’t he’s a reserve grader. Loves to drop his head instead of trying to lift. Remember Jimmy gave him a lovely spray too a couple of years ago. Plus he does love having his little whinges to the media.Happens too many times for my liking.

With the coaching staff changing, this season was always going to be sink or swim for Dufty.

Speed - has it in spades.

Attacking weapon in open & broken field play - yes.

Defensive positioning at the back - many question marks still remain.

Ability under the high ball - many question marks still remain.

Ability to get us on the front foot coming out of our red zone - many question marks still remain.

Player & Manager over inflating the asking price - I would say so (and if this is indeed the case I applaud the club for standing it's ground on the issue).

Overall - I have been waiting for Dufty to nail down his position in the team but still have yet to see it happen, and I think the coaching staff have also realised here that he isn't going to develop into the player that we need him to be.

I hope we have decided on who will be our full back going forward though.

Said it before, Hook will hedge & offer Dufty a 12mth extension & see how things play out next year. Unless something crazy happens & we sign Milf or Hynes I’m predicting Dufty will be in the Red V in 2022.

Norman is the one I want GONE!

I dont know how we can offer Duff an extension now when the player manager has come out and made it public to the media that the club said he is free to go and wont offer him another contract past this year.
Your insider contacts are letting you down

Don't disagree with what you said but he is still the best fullback we have at the moment would like to think we have a better one locked in before getting rid of him. also heard some one say that their still considering to resign norman. WTF

No one is after Dufty & his dodgy shoulder won’t help him. In the absence of anything else on the table he’ll stay for another year.

DRAGONS SET SIGHTS ON STORM TARGET AS DUFTY TOLD TO FIND A NEW CLUB
BY LACHLAN GELEIT 2 DAYS AGO
mattdufty.jpeg

St George Illawarra are reportedly willing to let go of their best attacking weapon in Matt Dufty.

The lightning quick number one has scored eight tries and assisted five in 10 appearances for the Red V this year.

Speaking on Nine's 100% Footy, NRL journalist Danny Weidler revealed that he's been told the fullback is free to "go look around" for a new club.

"It's my understanding that Matt Dufty has been told by the Dragons that he is free to go. I don't think they want him for next year," Weidler said.

"The information I've got is that he's been told they don't want him and go look around. All the information I've got is that they don't want him at the club.

"I don't know what Matt Dufty has done wrong as a footballer.

"They've had a chance to re-sign him for a while now at the Dragons and they've decided not to."

The Daily Telegraph’s Michael Carayannis believes the club is hesitant to sign Dufty because they’re setting their eyes on Storm utility Nicho Hynes.

“The Dragons have been very reluctant to re-sign Matt Dufty,” Carayannis said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“They want to give him some time and have a look at him and assess him under the new coach.

“They’re in for Nicho Hynes, but they’re not the only ones.

“I think Cronulla will look at him, Brisbane are definitely in for him, he’s very much in demand.”

Hynes’ Storm teammate Cooper Johns told SEN 1170 Drive with Joel and Fletch on Monday that he thinks “it would be best” if the breakout star went to a rival club.

Article in the Telegraph I can’t fully access but it’s saying our lack of interest in retaining Dufty is due to off-field issues. Would explain a few things.

Where will Matt Dufty be playing in 2022? Ranking the Dragons fullback's likely destinations

LEAGUE
ST. GEORGE-ILLAWARRA DRAGONS
LEAGUE

In shock news this week, St George Illawarra Dragons fullback Matt Dufty has been told he is no longer wanted by the club, and now looks set to move on at the end of 2021.

The 25-year-old is one of the most exciting players in the competition, and has the ability to create points by himself at any stage.

1. CANTERBURY BULLDOGS
Definitely the club most in need of Dufty's services and what he brings to the table.

Canterbury have struggled for points for many years and it hasn't changed too much in 2021 with new halves Kyle Flanagan and Jake Averillo.

The 25-year-old would bring some much-needed speed and creativity to the Bulldogs, and sources can reveal the club have already put some feelers out there for Dufty.

The only thing potentially standing in the way would be Josh Addo-Carr, who had been rumoured to be offered the No.1 role when he moves to Belmore next year.

If we were to place a bet on where Dufty lands in 2022, the Bulldogs are at the very top of the list.

2. BRISBANE BRONCOS
Another club without a secure long-term fullback, Brisbane are another club reportedly interested in Dufty for next season.

While their main priority appears to be Nicho Hynes, they will have some competition. St George Illawarra have entered the race for the Storm utility as a replacement for Dufty.

Jamayne Isaako has been shuffled in and out of the position in recent years, but has shown glimpses of his potential at the back so far this year.

The Penshurst RSL junior would benefit from playing alongisde an elite halfback in Adam Reynolds, as well as a strong forward pack including Payne Haas and Tevita Pangai Jr.

3. CRONULLA SHARKS
While their current fullback Will Kennedy is in some great form, he's still without a deal for next season and there doesn't seem to be a rush to keep him at this stage.

Dufty and Kennedy are extremely equal on stats this year. The pair both have 8 tries and 6 linebreaks to their names, with the Sharks fullback one ahead in terms of try assists and Dufty ahead on metres per game and tackle breaks.

He could certainly be an option that Craig Fitzgibbon looks at, but their first objective will be sorting out their halves for next season.

4. NEW ZEALAND WARRIORS
This was in the works for quite a while, with Dufty a potential replacement for departing fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

Unfortunately for the Dragons star, the Warriors have now gone and signed Reece Walsh and he looks to be their long-term choice at the back after starring in his first five games of NRL.

They could still go after Dufty for next year and move Walsh to five-eighth - but at this stage, it looks unlikely.

5. GOLD COAST TITANS
Another club that had been chasing Dufty in the past, the Red V speedster remained at the club last year despite some keen interest from the Titans.

It led to a career resurgence for the fullback, who went on to lock down the Dragons' starting spot.

There is a slim chance he ends up on the Gold Coast for next year, but there's always the possibility of playing AJ Brimson in the halves and Dufty at fullback.

Anthony Griffin breaks silence on rejected fullback Matt Dufty
St. George Illawarra Dragons coach Anthony Griffin has confirmed that one of the NRL’s fastest players is on the outer at the joint venture.

St George Illawarra Dragons Press Conference
NRL: St George Illawarra Dragons coach Anthony Griffin addresses the media following his side's agonising one-point loss to the Sharks.
Dragons coach Anthony Griffin has explained why the club won’t offer fullback Matt Dufty a contract beyond 2021.

A local junior, Dufty has played 77 games for the Red V since debuting in 2017, but reports emerged this week that his time in the ‘Gong might be drawing to a close.

Griffin corroborated those rumours on Thursday, saying the pint-sized custodian is not part of his long-term plans at the joint venture.

“Matt’s been here for five years and he’s a really good person. We haven’t got any other issues with Matt other than football-related,” he told reporters.

“I want to make that point clear, it’s never been anything off the field that we’ve had a problem (with) since I’ve been here and certainly the people that have been here before me back that up.

“We’ve got to build our list and Matt’s made a really good contribution here over the period he’s been here but come to the chase, we don’t see that going forward on our list.”

The former Broncos and Panthers boss shot down speculation that his side would make a play at Melbourne utility Nicho Hynes, whose contract at the Storm runs out at the season’s end.

Hynes has proved a handy understudy for the injured Ryan Papenhuyzen this season but will likely need to look elsewhere if he hopes to become a regular starter at NRL level.

Griffin says Dufty’s replacement won’t come from outside the Dragons, however.

“We’ve got some great young kids coming through in Cody Ramsey and (Tyrell) Sloane,” he said.

“Where we are, at the moment, we’re not looking to go to the market and make a really big purchase in that position. That might change, salary cap and the management of your roster changes day-to-day, and that might change down the track.

“We haven’t not offered Matt Dufty a contract so we can go out and offer a heap of money to someone else because we haven’t got a heap of money in next year’s cap.”

Hope is not lost for Dufty, though. The 25-year-old will likely pique the interest of both the Bulldogs and Broncos, both of whom are in need of a specialised fullback for 2022 and beyond.

After listening to Hooks interview about Dufty, I just don’t get why they would let him go except for maybe $$$. Yes Dufty has his deficiencies in defense, granted, but in 3 halves of football over the last two rounds we haven’t looked like scoring. E.g. Both tries v’s Cronulla last week came when they had players in the bin.

He is a long time coming local St.George junior with X factor speed to burn and could have been utilised as a No.14 attacking weapon. With the proper coaching and a solid system he would have been a much better player than what he is today

Unfortunately his development has been hindered by a shocking coaching regime with a below par squad over the last 4-5 years, and now Hook has wiped him like a dirty arse just after only 10.5 rounds in, just as he was on the improve prior to the shoulder injury.

I believe a top notch coach would have seen the potential and worked on his development and a game plan around his developing skillset (e.g Bennet with Soward), instead of throwing in the towel so early.

I threw out a hypothetical on here a few months ago about how Paps would have went in the Red V with shithouse coaching and a reserve grade roster over the last few years? I didn’t really get any definitive responses as it may have been too hard to process for some, with most just resorting to pointing out how shit his defence is, full stop.

Yeah, I have wanted to throw the remote at the TV and do yell expletives at him every times he f@$%ks up, but when creating tries and scoring his own I have not been more excited watching him in full flight since the days of B.Moz, Tingah, Choc, Chariots, Walford and Slippery Moz in my time.

I don’t know why, but I’m having the same sad feelings I did when we let Mick O’connor go to Manly for those that remember. That didn’t turn out well for us as he went on to win a comp with Manly and was captain at some point from memory.

With todays confirmation by Hook and him stating that we aren’t looking outside, rather Ramsey or Sloan will be the future moving forward, I think Dufty may have played his last game for the Dragons at NRL level. Surely Hook will want to give these young guys as much exposure as possible in the top grade knowing full well that 2021 is now a write off.

I wish Dufty all the best for whatever the future may hold because I have no shame in saying that I am a fan. Before some of you start.... I'm not his, dad, cousin, mate or a distant relative nor any relation at all, I haven't even met the kid. However I will still be a fan even in different colours and I will still cheer him on as he leaves the slowest backline in the comp eating dust and bits of dirt and grass in his wake sprinting under the posts untouched.

I have seen very little of Sloan, and I don’t think Ramsey is quite ready yet for a NRL fullback at this point so it would be safe to say that the rest of 2021 is going to so slow and frustratingly boring from here on in because I don’t see where our points will come from unless one of the youguns turns out to be a complete freak in the NRL. It will be very painful to watch. In all sincerity whomever it is that wears the No.1 Rev I hope and prey that they are 10 X the player that Dufty is.

I see there is a Nyko Hynes thread pumping and a lot of forumites are at the ready with their baby oil and box of tissues in anticipation.Yeah, he may have talent and looks fantastic in purple, but how did a talented Widdop go in our system with a reserve grade coach and roster?

I can’t see much difference happening this year from the past 10 years, we are 5- 6 April Premiers with the only impressive display against Parra, the other 4 wins were against bottom teams and a Turboless Manly. It’s the same old boring style of football with the same old boring and dumb squad lacking basic skills and losing winnable games. Twice to Cronulla (OUCH!!), Warriors, and Tigers. The way things are at the moment I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we lose the next 5 winnable games against Tigers, Broncs, Dogs, Raiders, and Warriors with the only certainty of points being in Round 17.

The Parra game had my hopes up for a little while, but then the ensuing weeks gave me a sense of deja-vu and I have lost a fair bit of my optimism in the coaching staff since with their game plans and pick and stick with certain underperforming players.

Todays interview with Hook was another strike of the hammered on the nail and if stupidity prevails and hints of expensive inferior oxygen thieves like Norman are re-signed on top of the biased, corrupt and staged WWEesque predictable shitshow that once used to be a competitive sport called Rugby League continues, then I will walk away from it all as a fan of the once mighties and the once great game it used to be.

Rant over, just needed to vent and get that off my chest. Thanks in advance to anyone bothered reading.

Not re-signing Dufty - for all his faults, perceived or otherwise - will mean that there will be NOT ONE St George junior in the NRL squad.
Let that sink in for a moment...
Some Centenary.

Lomax? Lawrie? Sims? Bird? Just off the top of my head are all local juniors. Not to mention Amone ans a host of others that are on the cusp.

Don’t know that I’ve ever seen such a public execution of a Dragon junior

... one with such commendable current stats,

... one attracting disbelief in his treatment across many commentators ( can’t be a football issue)

... and one enduring a relentless & largely inexplicable hounding by his Club’s Forum FFS

.... and despite his being their only attacking weapon in a backline cursed longterm by now 2 coaches’ incompetent selection biases & prejudices.

A 1 year extension at least until a junior replacement proves to be more worthy?

- & not speculatively or hypothetically so at NRL level

(yes it’s called form Hook - something you totally overlook in Teflon).

Duff’s manager’s poor advice
perhaps has a lot to answer for in this debacle.

His corner has certainly crossed Hook in some irredeemable way

I hope Dufty finishes the season strongly.
Something tells me this thread will go on for years, even once he moves on.
Let’s hope for our sakes that Dragons next fullback is the complete player with speed to burn. I don’t want a Dugan like fullback.

Agree, never surprise if that move presented itself again. Good to have that as an option anyway. Lomax just got that little bit of extra bulk muscle that Ramsey should develop over the next few years. Creating and developing more generalists and footballers over specialist and athletes with only one dimensions to their game i believe will serve us well in the future.

Re Dufty. I too was a big fan as I know his father Glenn since high school and wanted people to give him time as also saw the speed and try scoring ability
However you can only judge a so-called elite player on the back of what the market does and he has been marketed for quite a few years but no one in the NRL has bothered to snap him up
Plenty of iinsiders close to the club have indicated to me for a couple of years a slight attitude and ego has been a problem despite Hook politely saying nothing there and watering it all down
I too thought that is Ok he will grow up , give him time
He is 25 and should be on near elite $$$ for a spine position but isn’t
I honestly think it’s his reluctance to take the collision in attack and defence and be switched on for the full 80 minutes to be where he needs to be has been exposed by many

Some say he can play 6
maybe he can but defending in the front line again would be an issue for him regardless of protection around him + no kicking game

We’ve got the media trying to sell him on the market by nominating the clubs that should look at him
Let’s see what pans out but I’m gonna trust the club on this one
We need toughness and culture back in our club on the field across the board because we certainly lost that in spades since Bennett left
hook has realised this and I’ve already seen a movement back towards that direction in Hooks player selections and recruits
It is just unfortunate Matt doesn’t fit that mould and he wouldn’t at really any NRL clubs
Like you... I am disappointed And hopes he would Realise the potential and turn into that Pap teddy or turbo like fullback
I can only wish him too well going forward

Last but not least no one on this forum more than me wants Norman gone because of his salary and lack of spark and creativity in attack at times but unfortunately Hook needs him there because of;
kicking game
he can defend when his minds on
no one else ATM in the club at the moment can organise the troops in attack like he’s does until a young one is ready to step up and take on that role

It is unfortunate Ben Hunt’s and Clunes voices are not the answer nor that type of player

My rant over
