Matt Elliot: more powerful than we thought?

Just lately we have had Mogg leave, rumours of Germ, Shif and Thommo going elsewhere and no mention of any new signings.

Does this reflect that Mr Elliot has a lot more respect from the players than we thought? Now he has left some players are considering a change and looking elsewhere to play? Some appear to be leaving due to management not willing to re-sign them as maybe Henry has indicated he does not want them in the team, or has suggested other options??

All this is hypothetical and in my imagination, but it has raised my eyebrows when i hear of some of our better players looking elsewhere. I think where there's smoke there's fire, so maybe there is a HUGE change to the club next year in ways we haven't thought of yet.

Maybe its all just June 30 tactics, players looking to earn more $$ and players managers playing ducks and drakes...:?

Tell me your thoughts guys,

Its obvious his well liked, just look at how the players talk about him.

heck schif signed a deal that would let him out if Matty leaves.

I think we will have to wait for our recruitment to be finished before we can assess what is really happening. Has Mogg jumped or was he pushed by Henry? Will Thommo and Shcif stay? Hopefully but if they leave will we find quality replacements? But maybe Henry already has replacements lined up? Who will be our other sigings? We've had a few unexpected departures will they be balanced by unexpected arrivals that offset them? etc etc

ATM its impossible to really gauge where we are at in terms of recruitment and retention IMO.

What i would say is that the club appears pretty confident. Its not in a rush to re-sign players like Jones, Martin, Campese etc and doesnt appear to worried about losing Smith, Germ, Toots etc. From that I would guess they already have a few signings in the bag, hopefully pleasant surprises.

Yeah I think that the Elliot factor is huge at the moment.
Players like Thommo have really blossomed under Elliott and are probably really sad to see him go.
It's also possible that Thommo has experience with Henry from his lower grade coaching days and doesn't like him.

We really dont need JH, he never really had much talent - he was just an honest toiler who happened to be around when the Cowboys started to find some form and he reaped the rewards because he was the goal kicker.

maybe he's going to souths.

i am worried but im just leaving it to management atm. 2004 was a tragic display of losing quality and signing nothing. i really hope we dont go through it again or we will be forever rebuilding.

also i think its hard to be a success on field with so many changes in the off season so it may take a couple of years. hopefully im wrong.

More powerful than WHO thought?? The anti-Elliot push seems to exist only on these pages. Commentators always say that Canberra seems "Well coached" and the place the a coach's value is really shown, the contract market, revealed that Elliot was in very high demand.

This website is not reality, no matter how much we try to convince ourselves otherwise.

I don't think he's more powerful but I do believe he is a better coach than some people give him credit for. I for one am very pleased we acquired him at Penrith. He has you guys going along very nicely. You have slipped under the radar a bit as Daley mentioned on Fox this week.

I think your reading too much into it.

Germ han't got an offer from us, Thommo is just a rumour. Mogg got an excellent 3 year offer and sometimes clubs do whats best for the player.
Schif, we will see but he has had problems with coaches in the past, so its no suprise he would have the get out clause.

I agree Edwahu. It is just that time that players are late in their careers and looking elsewhere to grab as much cash as possible.

What I enjoyed most about this thread is that it was started by someone who wholeheartedly agreed with Tokyo the other day that there are too many speculative posts. Talk about the pot and the kettle.

Oh the irony of it all

Things may not be looking great, but we have to wait for the silly season to come up with any sort of analysis really. I think next season will be a rough one regardless, with all the inexperience. Hopefully people show a bit of faith in Henry, as he is inexperienced and will no doubt make some mistakes. Especially with such a young squad. In fact I'd say it'll be similar to 2001 and 2002 when Elliott started, hopefully Henry has a more stellar longterm plan.
