Matthew Lodge Arrested in New York

Auv'a faced court, pled guilty, showed remorse, was of previously good character, underwent extensive counselling (declining an offer to play for Samoa so he could do so) etc. He was ashamed of what he did (as he should be).

Lodge has done jack shit. Also, if he committed the same crime here he would've been charged with burglary which is 14 year offence. Let's compare apples with apples.

Probably right (and its probably word for word how I'd justify Packer at the Tigers). What has always disgusted me about the Auv'a case (besides the actual assault) was the fact that he played an entire season and a GF AFTER being found/Pled? guilty to assaulting a woman and only served a short suspension after his sentencing which coincidently was post GF. Of course this is an example of disgusting ethics on the part of Souffs & the NRL and shoudn't be surprising.

After criminal proceedings you can. This is how damages are usually dealt with. Pretty much the same as what is happening with Lodge.

im sorry
you can't in Australia
if a court makes a ruling here in a criminal matter , thats the end of it
unlike the USA , where the verdict does not prevent the victim from pursuing the defendant

the most famous case
OJ simpson
found not guilty of murder in a criminal proceeding , but was still dragged before a civil hearing for damages
utter crap & looney tunes stuff
not possible in our fair land

Wayne is a cut above the rest, bringing in a man that everyone hates to the very core of his being, think of all the penalties we will get when blokes try to knock him out

The Broncos don't look real good in all this. Paying lodge base NRL wage isn't making it easier for lodge to make good on his debt. Despite what we think of the man, that is far below market value, especially considering Newcastle offered him way above that. So what "off the books" inducements have the Broncos offered , surely a man who wants to start his adulthood over would take up a contract that would allow him to make good with his victims?

I'm just waiting for the thouroughbreds to pay his debt for him or give him an interest free loan that toddles will allow to not be counted in the salary cap or contravene third party agreements (what company in their right mind would do that with lodge?) for it all to go away amongst all this mounting pressure.

Todd can then go back to blackballing manly coz a THird party sponsor entered the dressing room.

I'm all for giving people a chance to rehabilitate, but why didn't this guy do time in the US?
BTW how good is he? I can't say I've seen him play.
I think he's pretty handy. Was rated highly before his dramas. I saw him in the Q Cup near the end of last year and he was a cut above, big, strong, ran hard with good hands for an offload.

I will say this:

I would gladly let Lodge get me in a headlock and throw a few punches for 1.5m.

His actions were violent and disgusting.

But exactly how they came about a 1.5m pay out I've no idea.

Anyone is welcome to assault me and say a few mean words to my family for that much!

Also, the family saying they are traumatised and will never get over it... again it won't be a popular opinion but to that I say you need to harden up.

It can be a nasty world out there. No doubt it was a scary incident; but NEVER get over it?

I personally don't understand why people would choose to be a victim like that.

He should never have been registered, but people need to understand that the victims lawyer is going through the media because they either believe it's a quicker & cheaper way to pressure Lodge to commit to paying off the compensation than going through Australian court proceedings, or because they don't feel they would be successful getting the judgment recognised in an Australian court.

They want to be paid, understandably, but don't buy the 'role model for Australian children' crap, if he was paying them from a million dollar contract they wouldn't give two shits about Australian children, as they have said previously, "they don't want him to not be allowed to play rugby". It's about money, let's call it for what it is, which should also make people not blindly accept that "he hasn't apologised", or made any effort to pay them compensation. He shouldn't have been registered, no doubt, but that shouldn't stop the media from basic balanced reporting, it doesn't make Lodge look any less of a grub, but it gives more credibility to the story.

Umm, they didn’t choose to be the victims.
Lodge & his actions is where the responsibility lies. To suggest otherwise is really poor.

I don't think he was saying that, he's saying that they're choosing to let it affect their lives by saying shit like "we will never get over it"

Well they’ve had no closure or witnessed any remorse by all reports. Perhaps that would be the start of it.

Not the first time Lodge has lost his shit and certainly won't be the last. Reminds me of Todd Carney in that does not appear to show any remorse or accept responsibility for his actions. We've all made mistakes but repeat offenders tend to be the ones that don't admit they've done the wrong thing and hence don't learn from their mistakes.

It's Seppoland - the country that set all the precedents as far as outrageous litigation goes.

Did you read the facts? Its not a few bad words and a streetfight. The prick had invaded their home and went on a rampage with the wife, kid and girl inside while the dad was locked out. They probably thought the were going to die.

As for amount, the US has triple damages so it could be that. Us figure was 1.2m, so damage claim of $400k is not unreasonable

Carney, for all the stupid things he's done is nowhere near the threat Lodge poses if he flies off the handle.
