Matty Johns and his sensationalist claims

Matty just loves saying things. Overcompensating for his own perceived bias perhaps. Who knows, but JT ain't no Joey. He's the best half of this era though, no question.

Staying off the pingers

JT has never failed a drug test. Neither has Joey.
JT hasn't admitted to drug use while still an active player. Neither did Joey.
JT plays in a small one team town with a sympathetic media. So did joey.
JT has had a few public run in's with the cops on late nights. Joey hasn't.

Exactly what proof do you have that JT doesn't act like a tool because he is on the gear? Or simply just get on it?
If you take out the QLD Origin Stilnox drama, getting pulled up by the cops for nuding up out the front of his house, having a criminal for a manager, and getting pulled up for being a tool at the casino.........Joey and JT had remarkably similar lives during their playing careers. Except that Joey was a better player in general and a far better player in big games. That might be unfair on JT because he hasn't really played very many big games. I can remember about two or three. Two GF's and maybe last year's semi against Manly. The only 1 of those 3 games he won was when he was on the bench in a team that was essentially over the cap.

Matty is the one on the pinga's.

Speaking of sensationalism, certain commentators wax lyrical that every number one spine player is the best of all time - over and over and over again. I don't think we're far off Billy Slater being thought of as not the greatest fullback of all time with the way commentators are stroking their mojo over GI. I'm not saying these blokes are bad players at all, but sometimes its over the top. The players pre 1996 or so must have all been inferior crudmunchers.

Joey was the better player, but I'm fairly sure JT has come up with some pretty handy performances during the past 21 consecutive SOO games he's played

The guy was a junkie who admitted to taking pills his whole career. He shouldn't have been included in the team of the century and the whole immortals concept is a complete joke because of his inclusion in it.

Yep, another one of those junkies with $5 million and 5 jobs. They are a scourge!!! lol

Seriously though, Joey gets a brownie point for admitting it. I'm sure those on the forum that hang around footy players could rattle off some stories. You sound like a NQ fan, you could write a book on dodgy behaviour. Out of sight and out of mind up there. Who will dob them in? Do you think WIN is blowing the whistle? lol
Usually when a player gets drunk and tackles a bouncer or takes non prescribed drugs or takes a sly photo of people having sex they claim no wrongdoing. Joey is the exception to the rule.

I'm all for setting junkies on fire but Joey isn't one. And in the world of the NRL he isn't in the top 10. I hope that doesn't shock you.

Admitting to occasionally taking recreational drugs doesn't automatically make you a junkie dipshit. TS asked you to state one thing that JT does better than Joey and you come up with this. Clearly you have nfi.

You're right, he did too

Ok so TS already mentioned goal kicking so ill add that Thurston has played (and won) more state of origin games, scoring almost 50 more points (and counting) and has never once been selected on the bench. His origin goal kicking record dwarfs Goeys too but we established that so I won't double dip. Admittedly, Goey has played 4 more matches for Australia but given that Thurston has at least 5 more years of footy ahead of him I'm confident he might manage to rein those in.

How'd I do?

jeez clutching at straws much up there

Anyway, a media personality over-exaggerating someone's talent, why I never. Be hard-pressed to find one who doesn't or hasn't in the past, besides maybe Sterlo.

Exactly.

And as someone has said, Matty will generally say that he thinks someone is better then Joey to avoid being called biased.

Imagine if he continually said that Joey is the greatest player ever and no one would come close. People would still be whinging.

oh get off the high horse.

His brother is just as bad, if not worse, in the sensationalist stakes.

How many times I've heard Andrew Johns say something like "this [insert up and comer] is an absolute freak. I've never seen an athlete like him" only for said player to disappear into obscurity is laughable.

MILTON THAIDAY !

Johns was good.

But this notion that he is waaaaaaay better than the great halfbacks of the modern era i.e Sterlo, Langer, Stuart, Thurston has gotten out of hand.

It's hard to disagree with this. I've always had Joey and Alfie on the same level.

Does this guy genuinely believe the stuff he says or does he just do it for the attention?

My favourite line last year was "Josh Hoffman...i tell you what, he's the next superstar of the game". Over and over again, until he shut up about half way through the season. I wonder why

At least it was nice to know that i wasn't missing things when watching Hoffman. He was a plodder then and he remains a plodder now. Nice one, Johnsy.

But he's just topped that one by stating that he reckons Thurston will surpass his brother in a couple of years as the best halfback of all-time.

Now don't get me wrong, JT is an amazing player and has been for almost a decade. He'll go down as perhaps the most dominant half in Origin history when judging his entire resume.

But better than Joey? Don't make me laugh. JT is amazing, but i'll never be able to describe to my grandkids just how good Joey was...they'll just have to watch the footage. He had an extra 25% to his game that JT or any other half ive ever seen just doesn't have.

It's not a slight on JT, or Alfie, or Cronk; it's just what made Joey an Immortal - a touch of genius that he was born with, similar to Messi or Jordan in their respective sports.

Sorry for ranting. Im just sick of every "expert" commentator and his dog telling me that everybody is the greatest ever these days. Have a bit of perspective, fellas. You'll still get your tv time!

40 pages of "no he's better because he represented my state" coming right up

LOL

I also enjoyed his "Milton Thaiday will be NSW fullback" line after about 3 good games for Newcastle. Bearing in mind this was when Mini was the best fullback in the world and at his peak.

That wasn't even the best part.

The best part was that Milton Thaiday is from Queensland.

The way I see it, Matty used to be the biggest fence sitter in Rugby League media. Dead-set, I don't think he ever gave a tip without trying to cover the other team being a good chance - even if it was the Rabbits at their worse.

However, he'd always compensate by making some sensational comment that usually involved a Newcastle Knights player past or present.

My favourite was around 2010 when he'd try and sell Timana Tahu as the former 'best centre in the world' prior leaving to Union. This despite everybody and their dog knowing it was between Gaz and Hodges. Even Matt King had a better claim than Tahu.
