Johns without a doubt. Week in week out he would turn up and perform. Thurston has on games and off games. Johns was the far superior defender. When Johns was playing for the knights, he made the players around him better. When he wasn't there the other players struggled to be up to first grade standard. Johns at times was near unstoppable 10 meters out and due to his incredible strength. Johns also constantly played the game 2 or 3 plays a head of what was going on. What made Johns the best player in the world was not just his physical capabilities and skill levels, but it was that he had the best footy brain in the business.

I'd back Johns. Agree with the above, there's some seasons with Thurston's looked very good at Origin and then not seemed to make much difference for the Cowboys. Johns was a very complete halfback.
