Is this the test Waugh set NZ 287 to win off 57 overs?

Kiwis needed 15 to win in the last over with 4 wickets left? falling short by 10 cause McGrath bowled legal wide deliveries?

yeah sure same thing

It was about the last 5-6 overs. But carry on soldier, good story.

Steve Waugh set a bold (and slightly cocky) declaration.

Richardson surprisingly attacked, Fleming & Astle ran with it, Cairns & McMillan belted a few sixes and Australia panicked.

McGrath fired in perfectly legal wide yorkers and McMillan and Parore couldn't do anything but take singles. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Very good game, would have been very interesting if Waugh had to defend declaring on 84/2.

Turned out to be one of NZ's best tours of Australia, ended up 0-0.

And yes, calling the match early is absolutely disgraceful.

It was the Indian tail for ffs, did they forget the famous Sydney finish a few years back? The collapse is *always* on.

Just plain ridiculous.

Wow Dhoni pulled the pin, that was a massive surprise.

I gotta say full credit to him to bow out and not hang around unwanted, he could have played till he was 50 if he wanted to. Could have waited for a tour against the West Indies at home and go out on a high.

Ryan Harris was in worse shape when he cleaned up Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel in the dying overs to win the Series for Australia in South Africa.

Anything can happen in 4 overs Spud Smith.

The key part here is "to win the series".

Harris is by FAR our best and we need to nurse him.

Would have liked to see Lyon and Smoth bowl out the last 4 overs and make use of that rough if the pacers didn't have it in them. Who knows what could have happened but at the end of the day everyone thinks they know better until they are put in the situation, so benefit of the doubt to Smith, he must know what he's doing.

Quality bowler but Mitchell Johnson single handedly won Australia the Ashes and South Africa series(37 wickets and 22 wickets),The Mo is not at his best at present but he brought Aussie cricket out of the doldrums.

Aussie cricket had Ebola before Michell Johnson went nuts.

Clarke did the same thing at the Oval. Its not that its illegal. What Smith did was perfectly legal to its just that Australian captains talk a big game about you gotta lose to win but its all PR. They all would rather draw a test than lose one. Its like criticising Ponting for not hitting more sixes in his rear guard innings during the 05 Ashes. Why wasn't he trying to win ?????

At the end of the day he has an old bowling attack. Harris is a test by test proposition, Johnson is CLEARLY injured. He is like 10km/h down on pace. The ball was doing nothing, his bowlers had been bowled into the ground and the schedule has been insane. Especially if you consider the AWFUL circumstances that befell the team at the start of the summer.

I mean I think he should have bowled the last four overs because people pay to see a full day of cricket but its dumb to criticise him for his decision. He probably should have just bowled Haddin and Rogers for a laugh to finish it off or something.

Hard to disagree with any of this.

Certain hypocrisy though as pb is illustrating here

Aust never cease to attack, go for the win in any situation blah blah blah, but in reality the same as the rest of us

Smith and Dhono calling it off was fine IMO

Not the same. Australia do attack and try to win more than most. However in this case India was sitting back and waiting for a handout. Why should they just roll over and comply to that lazy approach from the opposition ? Do it for the greater good of international cricket ? I don't think so.

Revisionist bullshit largely... Certainly did that under Waugh with a team for the ages, and with other great sides. But the more ordinary sides could not afford to be so aggressive, and weren't...
