Brian Waldron defects to Super 15 franchise Melbourne Rebels

MELBOURNE Storm NRL chief executive Brian Waldron has defected to the new Super 15 rugby union franchise Melbourne Rebels.
The Rebels, who are set to join an expanded competition in 2011, lured Waldron across after five years in his position with the NRL champions.
The Storm staff, coaches and players were told of his departure today.
Waldron's position at the Storm is to be filled by the club's former chief operating officer Matt Hanson, who takes over the position, effective immediately.
Hanson was a former chief financial officer of the St Kilda Football Club, and general manager finance and administration at Etihad Stadium.

Meh

CEO's are corperates anyway, it's expected that they move around. As the article states, he was at AFL before he joined the Storm, and now he's off to another sport and another challenge.

I thought he was a bit of a merkin what with his comments about the judiciary last over Smith's suspension in 08, but him leaving for yawnion doesnt phase me and shouldnt be a problem for the game at all.

Frick, he's done a good job and takes a lot of knowledge of corporate partners etc to a rival. not good whichever way you look at it.

The replacement seems to be pretty good, bit of wait and see in it though. Worked in Melbourne for an AFL club and Etihad Stadium.

I'd have been worried if it was Greg Inglis or Craig Bellamy who defected to rugby union --- but Waldron? Nuh. He's done a competent job but competent business executives are hardly scarce on the ground. He'd be following the money trail, and good on him.

It is a club that has been losign a lot of money, and with News Ltd lookign to pull out, it's probably a good time to get someone new into the role, who can steer the ship down a more fiscally responsible path.

He will look to attract some of the Storms talent, Slater or Inglis would look good in a Rebels outfit according to Waldron...tehn they could play for the Wallbaies..everybody would like to be a dual rep.

Meh,We were as good, if not better for Brian then he was for us. He came to the Storm at just the right time.

Thanks for your work Wally but we will thrive without you.

oh the irony...

I wonder what their fans think of this, they've been giving to Fitzy for years for supposedly loving Union more than league.

I was a Waldron skeptic but after Ribot left I thought who is this AFL guy.

I my books he has made Melbourne Storm the most professionally administrated NRL club. A number of players, ex-players commentators and journalists have commented on how professional the club's structure is. This is attributable to Waldron being a "professional sports administrator".

If you think that good CEO of clubs are easy to find when you see the changes at Parra when boofhead Fitzy left then you know that a good CEO is worth his weight on gold.

I am going to miss him.

I wonder if his comments about Mason not going to the Storm in 2010 were just a bluff because he knew he was leaving anyway and could say what he liked..

Nothing ironic about it. Fitzy has never hidden his love of union, Waldron wouldn't even know the rules of the game and is obviously only going for the money.
