duck memory jogger
if you all cast your minds back to June 7th 2003 Ericsson Stadium you may remember a hulking big kid make his debut for the Warriors vs us
he cut us to bits that day, got himself a meatie and about 3 line breaks (as per memory only)
that was Mr Vince Mellars
secret bit the duck doesn't really wanna say
Our centres on the day were Mr J anderson and mr A Emelio
Exactly right. He carved the Sharks up. Scored a try on debut, and set up another one. His goal for the game was to not miss a tackle, he got 25 and missed 0 so he achieved that and more.
Coincidentally and somewhat ironically, probably his other fine game in the Warriors colours was a preseason game last year, versus Cronulla Sharks at Albany. From all reports, he ripped them apart. From there, in Bartercard, two prospects REALLY emerged during the early part of the season, Warriors fans left right and centre were calling for their inclusion, one was Tevita Latu who has achieved Kiwi status and the other Vince Mellars who with the right attitude certainly has the ability to make it. If memory serves me right, theres a Juniors Competition in his home city of Wellington that is named the Vince Mellars Cup.
Iafeta,
With all the descriptions I have heard, I would be inclined to whack him in the 2nd row.
Kimmorley can put a ball on.
Couldn't see why not. His best game this year against Melbourne they had him playing offensively as a centre, he made a line break down the left wing and then completely bombed a try for Tony Martin (I prefer to look at it though that he made an opportunity for a try), and then on defence he was defending near the centre of the park. There again he showed his actual tackle technique is particularly good. He however let that slip when they drifted him into a natural centre/wing defensive position against Manly, where he was unable to cover space and read angle runners.
He probably has more the pace attributes of a second rower, he's not dynamite over the first 10 but good enough over 100 so if he gets into the clear he'll do a number on a few players.
You'll notice in say an NBA draft when they draft rookies sometimes they describe a player as having a "Pro body", IE already has the build. Vince has that. He just needs a little bit of work on his defensive confidence and reading of play, and his initial acceleration. Otherwise for a centre or second rower you have a winner. I hope like heck he works out for the good of the continued development of New Zealand Rugby League and the competitiveness of the international game.
On the Warriors website Mellars positions are : 'Centre / Standoff / Prop'. COuld it be we will just use him as a prop, maybe a replacement for Beattie?
You may also notice Stacey Jones is listed as "Halfback/Centre/Second Row". Stacey in the centres/second row??? I wouldn't overly rate the Warriors website.
Teenagers Marcus Perenara (stand-off) and Vince Mellars (centre) equipped themselves as if they had 50 first-grade games to their name. They have yet to make their first-grade debut.
The above is some archived news; a comment on his performance in the trial v the Sharks in 2002.
