As a tribute to IRON MAIDEN, UK's Kerrang! magazine has persuaded 15 of its favorite bands to record unique covers of MAIDEN's greatest anthems for an exciting free CD entitled "Maiden Heaven".

The track listing and details for this world-exclusive release will be revealed next week and the CD will be available free only with the July 19 issue of Kerrang!

I'll wait until I see the lineup before I get excited- there was a slew of metal tribute albums early this decade but most of them sucked because the bands playing on them were rubbish. Still Mchine Head are an encouraging start.

Machine Head, you say? I may have to look into this...

Dream Theater? Bah. They've sounded the same for ages now. Not untalented, true. But...

Not untalented? That's the understatement of the year Eelementary ...

I always liked Machine Head's cover of Message In a Bottle

Apparently Dream Theatre did a tour playing Number of the Beast. I saw bits of their tour playing The Wall with Queensryche - not bad, although half of Dream Theatre bores me.

I downloaded a wonderful version of Welcome To My Nightmare by Dio once. Today discovered a wonderful version of Dream On by Dio and Malmsteen - posted the youtube link in the Singers thread.

Then again, I have hear Maiden do Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and it's sh*t. Can't even get the chords right.

Generally, these type of album's don't excite me. I recall one called "Stairway to Heaven - Highway to Hell" from the late 80's. Famous bands doing stuff by people who died from booze/drugs. Ozzy did an atrocious version of Hendrix's Purple Haze. Bon Jovi butchered "Boys are back in town". But Scorpions did "I Can't Explain" and it's a ripper.

Boys are back in town by Bon Jovi was great and featured in the movie Navy Seals.

The Machine Head cover should be good. The Sabbath tribute albums worked well, Nativity in Black 1 & 2 I think they were called. System of a Down's cover of Snow Blind was an absolute ripper!

Anyone heard the Cradle of Filth version of Hallowed by the Name? Awesome version and I'm not a fan of Cradle of Filth either.

Machine Head did a great version of Battery on the Kerrang Metallica cover disc, but then considering the similarities between those two bands they should have been able to pull it off.
The Metallic Attack Metallica tribute album wasn't bad actually, Death Angel doing "Trapped Under Ice", Motorhead doing "Whiplash", and Dark Angel doing "Creeping Death" were all awesome.

Has anyone seen the album " Numbers from the beast " An all star salute to Iron maiden.

Some real brilliance on that album but also some average performances as well at times IMO ( like was mentioned by SpM. ) But interesting that the version of " The Trooper " from the album. ( song No 6 ) had Chris SLADE on drums from ACDC, ( Yet a lot of Motorhead in that version lol ), and the drummer from Black Sabbath/DIO Vinnie Appice appeared in Aces High. Some legends on that album for sure.

Then in "Wasted Years" they have the drummer Jason Bonham from the band "Foreigner". Wide range of artists on that album, but some good stuff with the bad.

"2 Minutes to Midnight" ( song No 8 ) is sung by Joe Lynn Turner ( Deep Purple/Rainbow ). With the drums of ACDC and the guitars of Meatloaf and Poison .

Yeah, they did, I've got the CD. They only did it on a few times though on select shows. They released the CD of it on one of there websites. Pretty cool. Completely re-arranged Gangland. Made it sound jazzy.

Anyway I'll see what the line is on the tribute CD.

Hopefully Arch Enemy's crap cover of 'Aces High' isn't on it.

I haven't heard that one but I can only take AE in small doses. At their best they're pretty decent but they can be fairly samey at times.

There are far better bands of the 'melodic death' persuasion.
