Ashes 2015: Will selectors give Michael Clarke the same treatment as Brad Haddin and Shane Watson?

Birmingham: A hallmark of Michael Clarke's Test captaincy has always been his leading by example on the ground, from his much-admired tactical nous to his contributions with the bat.

His appointment in 2011 triggered an incredible surge in run-scoring over the next two years that made him not only far and away Australia's best batsman but the finest in the world. It was almost as if he had grown another leg with the responsibility of being captain on his shoulders

Right now, however, it's as if Clarke has the weight of the world on them, scratching his way through in the midst of a form slump that threatens to prematurely end his career.

Another cheap dismissal on a shocking first day of the third Test for Australia is beginning to raise questions about his future. The primary one is this: if Clarke can not rediscover some ounce of form for the remainder of this series, is this the end?

In a campaign that has already seemingly brought about the closure of the Test careers of Shane Watson and Brad Haddin Clarke, in his current guise, is in danger of being next.

You can't imagine he, particularly as captain, could go midway through a series like this, especially given that another of the thirtysomethings, Adam Voges, is also short of runs in the middle order.

Yet selectors, far from best friends with Clarke in recent times, will have to grapple with the subject of his future soon enough if the 34-year-old cannot emerge from a rut - and particularly in the event that Australia do not win this Ashes series.

He was bowled on Wednesday playing down the wrong line to a fullish ball delivered by the resurgent and recalled England bowler Steven Finn. On a day that didn't go to plan he'd also won the toss and batted on a seaming deck at Edgbaston, only for James Anderson to rip the Australians apart.

As much as that blew up in the tourists' faces Clarke remains a fine captain and his major dramas rest right now with the bat. He made only 10 on day one, continuing a lean stretch since he returned to the side from hamstring surgery. Going back further, though, the outlook doesn't look great either: in the past 12 months only one top-four player in the world (who's played 10 or more innings) has a worse average than Clarke's 28.63. That is Ian Bell, who the Australians played into some form when he scored 53 on Wednesday.

The numbers aren't the only issue for him, though. It's how he's getting them. He was again streaky in his short-lived stay in the middle on day one at Edgbaston, during which he had a run-in with England's destroyer-in-chief James Anderson, the target of his infamous "Get ready for a broken f------- arm" tirade at the Gabba 18 months ago.

"We just had a chat," Anderson said of this more mild altercation. "He just nicked one through the slips and I might have called him a lucky devil and he was in agreement."

Clarke's footwork has been a noticeable shortcoming in previous outings in this series but Ricky Ponting, his predecessor as Test captain, is not willing to write him off yet.

"Michael Clarke needs to stand up and start making some runs in that middle order," Ponting told ESPNCricinfo on Wednesday. "If he doesn't then the lower order does look more fragile.

"He doesn't look to be in the sort of form that we're used to seeing Michael Clarke in but none of us ever are. You go through these ups and downs and little troughs in your career and you've just got to find a way to battle through it. Hopefully that's in the second innings of this game."

Given how quickly the third Test moved along on the first day that could even come as early as Thursday.

2015 - 5 tests Ave 28.33
2014 - 7 tests Ave 35.75

22 innings 4no 599 runs 2 tons, no 50s Ave 33.27

In these last 12 tests from Clarke, he scored that brilliant 161no in South Africa. Take that one innings away, it reads

21 innings, 3no, 438 runs, 1 ton, Ave 24.33

Hopefully like that 161no in SA, He can get that one massive innings to help us retain the ashes. But it aint looking good

He's done a bit more and been around a bit longer than Haddin and Watson.

He certainly won't be moved on as captain. He strikes me as the sort of bloke who will move on before he becomes a parody.

Batting succession plans have been poor.

Bowling has been ok.....Many young quicks have been given games..

Spinners not so much...they are hard to find...

You only end up with Pontings, Clarkes, S Waugh, Tendulkar, Kallis when you give them a go at a young age.

Good that Smith has grabbed his chance. For mine many others have been tried and failed. Warner will need rock, he will always be hit and miss.

Who is the best batsmen -top 4- under 22

All the test batting lineups around the world are pretty average.

The saffers arent that great either.

Voges will go before Clarke and Rogers is retiring and Marsh is hardly a certainty.

Theres 3 places up for grabs in the top 6 before Clarkes and no ones kicking the door down.

Warners may be an issue as well.

Nearly time to stick a fork on him.

Being skipper, they wont drop him like they did with Hads and Watson.

It may depend on how he goes for teh rest of this series.

I wouldn't be surprised if they told Sunshine on the quiet, that once Rogers retires after these ashes, they will pick him again, as opener

He'll probably retire pretty soon anyway.

Even if he doesn't, I'd still pick him over the other options and back him to come good. Still big questions over Voges, and what to do if Rogers goes at the end of the Ashes.

Voges had 1000+ season.

Deserves a run.

For me though, try Maddison or Harris for Rogers when then pink ball comes.

Burns deserves another go IMO....another performer this season. Perhaps Bancroft.

Stop picking old crusty players in ODIs to, there only use is to see if a young fella can handle international competition.

We may win the Ashes but it will not be convincing.

Time to change the guard after this test series...or if 3-1 down.

Strikes me as someone who loves the limelight - so will move on when something better (Ch 9) is in place

Nobody that has been brought into the team seems better though, so bit of a worry for Australia

He'll probably hang around for the summer look to bump up his average against the Kiwi's, then retire in Sydney.

a massive cleanout is due soon
Rogers, Clarke, Voges, Nevill, Johnson are all 29 or older and only have 2-3 good years left in them

Oh God

Can you imagine him and Warne in the box together

Warner "Michael Clarke was the best captain for Australia since Mark Taylor, who was the best captain I played under"

Clarke " Cheers Warney, I learnt a lot from you"

Fair dinkum...Maddinson? Really...and Harris has scored diddly squat in FC cricket. Just no. The words heck no come to mind.

Cameron Bancroft should be the opener or Jordan Silk (if he has a good Shield season).

The last thing we need is more brain dead players like Maddinson who will do diddly squat on a pitch that does anything.
