Micky V will have to work his butt off to keep his spot in the team next year and perhaps this will bring the best out of him week in week out. Oh, that and the fact he's off contract at the end of next year ;-)

Stringer, Cayless, Cannings, Vella, Tsoulos & Armit will be fighting for a spot in the front row next year (assuming Stapleton & Peek are not re-signed).

I've been told Smith is a very big fan of Stringer's, and obviously Cayless is our captain and will start in the front row given that Smith wants Hindy & Morrison to play 80 mins in the 2nd row. Wagon is also a certain starter at lock under Smith. That leaves Vella fighting for a bench spot with Cannings, Tsoulos & Armit, not to mention Robinson, Afamasaga, Widders & Muckert as well as a couple of other new signings that might be announced in the coming weeks.

Don't be surprised to see Robinson used as a prop next year either which will only add to the competition for spots in the pack. When he was back at Parra in 2001 he was used as a prop off the bench and he often switches between prop/second row at the Roosters as well.

I'm pretty sure he played prop Friday night v Dragons coming off the bench for Jason Cayless.

If I was Smith, I'd want to go with 2 smaller but more skilled & agile props (Cayless & Robinson) in combination with 2 big boppers (Stringer & Cannings) in the top 17. Rotating the 4 but always combining a big bopper with a smaller prop on the field at any one time. i.e start with Cayless & Stringer then rotate with Robinson for Cayless & Cannings for Stringer.

If anything we should have let Vella go and kept Jason Cayless

Jason Cayless is averaging 87 metres a game compared to Vella's 102
Cayless averages 19 tackles whilst Vella averages 24.

hey spadam, next time you try and make someone look foolish you should prob do some additional research.....

Cayless' stats are over 10 games, Vella's are over 16 therefore if you work the numbers cayless has been more productive mate......

considering those are the 'averages' of both players this season you are incorrect. If Cayless makes 87 metres and Vella makes 102 how is Cayless more productive??

Mate, Vella has played more games so his figures are obviously goin 2b higher ie if cayless had played 16 games his stats would read :

16.64 hit ups
30.88 tackles
140.16 metres (highly unlikely i know)

thats how cayless would be more productive.......

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm parra001 you are mad...

Those are the AVERAGE stats - which is the totals divided by the number of games they've played.

So, in the 10 games that J Cayless has played he has produced such form that you would expect him to come out and average 87 meters and 19 tackles.

And for Vella, you would expect him to come out and average 102 meters and 24 tackles.

Cayless playing more games doesn't automatically improve his average #-o

And I'm living in a fantasy land?!

Say what you like about Vella, we sensible football followers know the truth.

And Hindmarsh has been playing badly in attack for some weeks now. This is why I called for him to be moved wider in defence and have someone else take his load. If they still want to run at him then they will have to keep going across field and wide.

[Vella] has talent as evidenced the previous week against the Roosters but there has to be a switch inside his head that gets turned on only when someone remembers to do it..... :?
Remember with Terry Leabeater (1986 bookend), someone used to have to punch him to rev him up to play at his best? (It was even rumoured that our own players would try it in a scrum, just to get the desired effect ;-) ) Maybe we need something similar with Vella to get that week in week out display of his talents...

Please, how can people say that hindys attack hasn't been the best? One bad game means nothing, he defends like an animal, dont even try and critisize Hindy, you will just end up looking foolish.

My spin re Vella...

Vella is a good prop. He gets good stats for hitups and tackles. The trouble is that he isour forward leader and enforcer. He shouldn't be. He isn't cut out for that role. He is a No. 2 yards man where there is no No. 1. And that's Brian Smith's doing. Cayless - our natural No. 1. is used as a ball player, and sometimes as a back rower. That's where the acquisitions of Stringer and Ridell will help next year.

My spin re Hindmarsh:

Didn't see the weekends game, but while his Origin form has been great, his club form not up to his normal par. Well, the bloke's got a right, hasn't he? That said, we all expect him to be the saviour every tie he takes the field, and so far he generally deliveres - to the point of probably saving Brian Smith's are with some of his performances. I was a bit peeved at his bagging of fans earlier in the year, coinsidering the crap performances that we copped.

That's why Smith bought Cannings this year.

Cayless could shift back to the second row, with Vella up front with Cannings.

When they both went down with a busted arm, we had no cover. Sure, guys like Stapleton have done OK, but they've only done OK. With guys like Stringer coming over next year, we'll have real quality depth which will help vella.

Hindy was awful on Saturday night and apart from his defence he has offered little to this team for the past few weeks aswell.

His first bad game in what.........5 years??

Its not even worth mentioning.

Suity

Wrong.

In two or three games last year (I can't remember the games, but I do remember that he missed about 5 tackles and only made about 15 hit-ups) he was pretty much non-existent.

Fair enough, he's warranted it. He's the only bloke who shows up every week to play apart from when he has shockers.

But I think people need to get off their "Blue and Gold Hindy Horses" for a second and realise - he has had a few bad games.

He's only human.

Having said that, I must say I agree - from an ex-International and Blues player, he should be making 30+ tackles and 15+ hit-ups every week.
