Cricket Australia has sacked head coach Mickey Arthur on the eve of the Ashes.

The former South African, whose contract was due to run until the end of the World Cup in March 2015, was informed of the decision over the weekend.

CA is expected to confirm his axing on Monday. It is not know who he will be replaced by, although highly rated Queensland coach Darren Lehmann is in England and has just completed a coaching stint with Australia A.

The decision comes as all of Australia's squad converges for the first time on Monday, in Taunton in England, for their first pre-Ashes tour match, against Somerset beginning on Wednesday.

Arthur was one of the major appointments in the aftermath of the Argus Review, which was ordered after Australia lost the 2009-10 home Ashes series to England. He was then coaching Western Australia but was selected after a worldwide search for the newly created head coach and selector position - former coach Tim Nielsen did not apply for it - on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Should never have been employed in the first place.

In saying that, they couldn't have picked a worse time to flick him now. Surely Invers should go as well now?

If I were CA, I'd be going cap in hand to someone like Steve Waugh and pleading with him to take over. We need a hard edge like him running the team imo.

Sutherland is the one who has to go.

Agree he shouldn't have been appointed in first place but sacking him now just screams of desperation....CA is making it up as they go along.

I wonder who was behind it though? Did Clarke go to CA?

Lots of questions to be answered.

Please not Lehmann.

Boof is one of my favourite sportsmen of all-time ... I've been a huge fan ever since the days he was tearing it up in county cricket with Yorkshire.

And i'd find it hard to cheer for a 5 nil win if Boof was in charge. Don't do it, Darren!

He should never have got the job in the first place but that isn't the point. How the f**k can you sack your coach just as an Ashes your is about to start??

What a f**kiing rabble, led by Chairman Victorian and that old fossil Invers.

Why wait until now??? If he wasn't the man for the job they should have sacked him after India and give the new guy a chance. And I thought Parra were run poorly.

Timing is ridiculous, but can be softened depending on the replacement I spose (Boof). Change is needed either way.

But really, he's only 1/4, possibly 1/5 of the problem.

Admiral-General Sutherland, Pat Howard and the Corpse are far more pressing cases for dismissal.

CA make Parra look like Man U regarding admin issues. CA have fallen so far even a tom tom would not be able to locate them

I didn't want him as coach but I feel sorry for him. He's walked in to a culture of over paid primma donnas who think they are god's gift to this Earth getting paid ridiculous amounts of money for hardly any return. The only player in the team worth the money he makes is Michael Clarke while the rest don't deserve half of what they get.

We really need a coach who will walk in, tell home truths to the players about how much a joke their application on and off the field is and that anyone who doesn't like it can f**k off the IPL. Lehmann isn't that man, he's too nice. He will make a fine test coach but our situation needs some serious discipline.

We have become a combination of England and India in the 90's.

Wow.

Lehmann, Berry or S.Fleming would be the in the frame to fill in.
Please not Darren Berry, absolute plonker.

Lehmann seems a decent option.

At the end of the day though a coach only does so much, the players have to take on some responsibility, something too few of them seem to do.
