With 17 alive and 3 of confirmed allegiance, the town investigator is going to need to step up before they are randomly killed should things continue the way they're going. Yes, they will get roleblocked by mafia, but I haven't seen any protectors die, and town would have one and maybe even both. It's better than dying with the information. Of course, this is under the assumption that the investigator can clear several (3 - 4 would be a nice minimum) townspeople by now, which may not be true.
