Those stats are way boring ! Soon it will be like Gridiron , all stats and big plays and a way boring game thats over analysied.I hate the missed tackle count, this sorta stuff its not sophisticated enough to pick up on a"real" missed tackle so its not really a guide, as are the tackles "made" . How do u add up the "three man defence" , one player to stop or slow the attacking player and two to put him on the ground while the other runs back to the defensive line? Do all three tacklers get a point or dose the first player record a miss? Actually I dont even care ! Just keep it up !

I SOOOOO agree with you Carina!

All the stats do is give Lozza and Whizzer something to crow about on Foxsports.

FFS, if we didn't defend well, then they would have scored a few more than 6 fuggin' points, wouldn't they??? #-o

of course stats don't tell the whole story.

BUT... they do give the coaching staff an objective break down of events within the game and can be very useful if interpreted with some degree of expertise and within the context of the overall game. particularly when tryiong to identify any weakness which need to be improved upon. so they do have their place in the game.

i don't see that collating statistics will chnage rugby league to be more or less like any other sport as every sport has statistics, it's just a matter of whether they are actually collected and reported or not.

but they do get a little borring compared to watching the peach make opposition origin players look entirely ordinary

At the end of the day, the only defensive stat that realy matters to me is points conceded.

Like it or not, we are currently the third best in the League.

P.S. Has anyone else noticed that Luke Covell is now the NRL's leading pointscorer?

Well I don't think I speak on behalf of everyone, although most people tend to agree with me because I'm right all the time

Well there you have it BTR no one on this forum apart from you gives a rats arse about miss tackle counts.

Your least intelligent post yet, ferrous

If missed tackles were as unimportant, or as desirable, as you're making out, they wouldnt bother counting them.

Some people like ferrous are getting the trophy cabinet ready for the premiership this year

The rest of us are realists and know missed tackle counts must be minimised, but are looking at it in a positive way: that is, there is room for improvement.

FFS thats a long bow to draw - add this stat to your list ......
missed opportunities to answer the question on scrambling defence - DS= at least 4!
missed opportunities to mindlessly exagerate any opinion that suits - DS=none

Well Millers you will be pleased to hear me say this.

so impressive has kimmorley been so far this year, I contribute the wins to him.
I would even go as far to say that without him, the cowboys would have won.

His spoiling defense cut off about 5 or 6 plays I reckon. He just picks the player picks the time takes the risk & gets in the way. Mainly why he is missng so many tackles & definitely well worth the misses.

Lets look at some of the miss tackle rates and points conceded from this weekend;

Sharks had 36 miss tackles and conceded 6 points.
Cowboys had 36 miss tackles and conceded 38 points.

Broncos had 25 miss tackles and conceded 14 points.
Eels had 25 miss tackles and conceded 54 points.

The Roosters this weekend only had 13 miss tackles.
From this relatively low rate compared to other teams above they have conceded 24 points.

So the miss tackle statistics are a non event.

Here is some food for thought.

Our total missed tackles compared to our opposition in each game is that close to even it does not matter.

Our total errors compared to our opposition in each game is that close to even it does not matter.

Our completed sets are down slightly (abt 5% less than our opposition and that comes mainly from thhe eels game - they completed at like 83%).

Our line breaks are better (thanks a lot to offloads.

Our most convincing win (cowboys) we were 6 breaks to 3

Any missed tackle could lead to a line break and as Millers pointed our they will eventually hurt you.

In our case we have made their miss tackles hurt them more than they have made ours hurt us. That is a damn positive thing and says that if we can reduce the missed tackles and keep making the opposition pay we are looking good.

The scoreline is always a mixture of miss tackles, errors, line breaks, offloads, penalties and just plain luck. A team can not control luck, errors can come from bad luck, line breaks come from missed tackles and pentalities can be a raffle.

So at the end of the day the thing you can control best is missed tackles and thats why they are important.

Were the Sharks have been very good this year I think is in there own red zone - well drilled defence and a confidence that everyone is doing there job so just keep doing yours. Makes a hell of a difference!!!!!

OK feel free to rip me apart

DS, don't go counting me as someone who doesn't care about missed tackles.

I just think they are a stat that needs to be looked at alongside others, like points conceded, etc.

I am also a little confused as to how they are counted.

As Reefy says (I think), Noddy might go into a few tackles that he then falls off - Why the f**k is that counted as a 'miss' when other defenders then take that player down? It doesn't make any sense to me.

Hence, missed tackles need to be noted, but looked at in context against other stats too.

Yeah fair enough.

That's why I'm saying that miss tackles can be a misleading stat.
If you go in for the tackle and the ball runner shrugs you off but there is still someone in front of the ball runner to stop a line break happening then that is no where near as bad as a one on one miss out wide where there is a greater chance for a line break to occur.

We've conceded the third least amount of points than any other club but have quite a high miss tackle rate in most matches. So either we are able to recover from line breaks or the miss tackles that are occurring aren't crucial ones causing a line break.
