Meanwhile, Parramatta have confirmed their interest in Cronk and will discuss plans to try and entice the Storm star at a board meeting tonight.
Parramatta coach Daniel Anderson will attend the meeting and chairman Roy Spagnolo said he would be asked to outline his recruitment strategy to replace Kris Keating, Feleti Mateo and Krisnan Inu.
The Eels yesterday signed North Queenland's Manase Manuokafoa for the rest of this season and 2011. He will fill the gap left by the retirement of Nathan Cayless. But Spagnolo said the club's main priority was finding an experienced halfback to play alongside Daniel Mortimer.
''The club hasn't had a top halfback since Peter Sterling,'' Spagnolo said. ''But Cooper Cronk could give us that. We're just waiting to see what happens with Melbourne but we're definitely interested in Cronk.''
Spagnolo said Anderson regularly provided written reports to the board but would attend tonight's meeting to speak to the directors in person.

this is what I don't get, how do you put forward a strategy to sign a guy who's still under contract with Melbourne??? kidnap him???

and it's now confirmed that Manase is Caylo's replacement for next year...lol!

that's wonderful

Not necessarily his replacement id say, but rather to replace the missing prop. Poore is the replacement for Cayless. (Mannah IMO but thats me)

I hope this recruitment strategy was writen up a while ago. Id also like to know why Hodgko was not a part of this strategy...

I'd like to know why it's taken so long into the season to present a strategy..

sh*t happens Stagger, things change very very quickly, players hoped for and tested don't work out, some leave, others come, some hoped for are now left behind because the Storm cap fiasco changed the landscape, a new plan is brought into place very quickly to take advantage of the bonanza but it causes mountains of emotional upheavals as players are forced to leave, etc, etc, etc, etc.....

There is more going on behind the scenes Stagger.... Cronk (& others are targeted), they want Cronk playing with the Eels within 2 weeks, etc, etc.... the news I have is Cronk wants to play with the Eels but the manager needs to sort out all the legalities, complications and ramifications of the cap fiasco... We should all have news by no later than this Wednesday before 30th June deadline expires....

If they purchased Tim Smith last year they would not be now under the pump and can bide their time and let things pan out for as long as it is required BUT now they are forced to declare their hand, they have no 7, and the rest is now old news.....

meanwhile, while we wait and see what happens with the Storm...clubs like Newcastle and the Bulldogs get a head start on some of the best player talent in the comp..smart move NOT.

Tim Smith would not have made a difference imo..infact he hasn't made a difference to Cronulla.

Casp, I like you mate, but now I know you're talking sh*t. There is no way we will be signing Cronk for this season, we could never fit him into the salary cap, especially after just singing Manase Manuokafoa to a contract which puts him on our books from this season.

You are totally full of it mate.

i don't think spags would be silly enough to make his plans so public if he wasn't relying on some information on the ground that none of us will be aware of.

I'd like to know why it's taken so long into the season to present a strategy..

I guess they didn't think they'd be without Hodko, Kelly and KK at this stage of the year

They would have also thought that Morts ticked the box after last seasons form.

On top of al that they recruited Humble, who I thought had no chance with all the other options that we had.

 Because he was at Manly by the time DA came aboard.

melbourne will have to shed players at some point prior to next season, leaving room in your cap to be in a position to act when this happens is a smart move. Let the other clubs get a full roster now and we may pick up a player as we will have room others wont.

At least it appears the board are allowing DA to handle his own roster and not forcing players onto him.

The big problem with cronk is that there are so many variables which could prevent him coming:
he is contracted to Melbourne; most other nrl clubs would take him; rugby and eel would take him
and I think whoever leaves the storm may leave the nrl out of spite; plus, and this is the big factor, you are also racig against all the other clubs and codes chasing slater smith and inglis.

If one of the other 4 leave, cronk will stay.

So the recruitment policy seems to be a shambles when you consider that Mateo is by a long shot the most talented player capable of playing in our halves and he is off without a replacement lined up.

We really should go after Michael Gordon. He is off contract at the Panthers and they don't seem to be able to fit him in.

He has speed to burn and is a top Goalkicker - perfect replacement for Grothe/Inu.

I just dont believe that we'd be happy to see three guys go - two of them on decent money, without there already being some discussions from the coach to the board about possible targets.

You'd have to hope they'd have someone lined up, I don't think they would let all
that talent go without a plan.

GI to replace Inu
Cronk to replace KK
Slater to replace grothe
Some cheap prop to replace Caylo (Manokesa guy)

:) Problem solved

Of course that's all wishful thinking,
