Who and why would anyone call their son "Pony".

Pony's not his real name. "Pony" is like a nickname or preferred name. Probably known by his peers.

Its actually Arthur, and like a lot of Rugby League players in that era, Pre War, they had a lot of nicknames.

Indeed although it wasn't just rugby league players, people in general in those times used nicknames, it is not rare to find people within ones family such as great uncles that used a nickname.

Well that has ended... Brian Lara made 167 in his 13th test, Bravo only made 166.
