Moving the Grand Final

My guess is they'll announce that this year will be at Accor due to timeframe yada yada, but announcing next 3 seasons will be at Suncorp unless NSW govt come to the fold.

If the reported $8m a season for 20 years is correct, than moving it is madness

yeh they wont move it if $160mill is on the table. If I was NRL I'd ask for it all up front though! They could then invest it and make some significant revenue of it, or use it to build their own stadium. If I was NRL I'd have asked for ownership of Commbank instead!

Signing a 20 year contract would be absolute madness. After the first couple years the NRL would be missing out on millions of dollars as the value of the GF grows. If the NRL don't use this opportunity to move towards selling the GF hosting rights on a yearly basis then they are mugs.

They also haven't really formally signalled that the rights are out to tender, and it'd be an even bigger mistake to sign an extended deal before making that clear to the other sates, Victoria in particular, and giving them an opportunity to place a bid if they are interested.

The news coming out sounds like just a one year deal for an alleged $8mill, allegedly $2mill less than Qlnd were willing to pay and they wanted three years at $10mill if media rumour is to be believed.

GF staying in Sidanee

If the deal is just for this year then whatever, if anything it makes sense given how little time there is until the event.

However, if they've sold an extended deal to NSW for less than Qld if was offering then it's just further proof that the N in NRL has never stood for National...

People use the Super Bowl as an example but how many plebs get to actually go though?

That is the sort of stuff you can do IF you are willing to talk, PVL has shown no interest in that

I'm sure that Queensland would have adjusted their deal to a more appealing one year deal if they knew the length of the contract was a sticking point.

Let's be honest though, PVL and/or the ARLC don't really want to move the GF from Sydney unless they've got no choice.

Vlandys live now scoffing at a question of if a GF could be held in Melbourne. This guy!

Abdo confirms its only a one year deal.

The amount of people that can afford to go to the Super Bowl is irrelevant to the point I was making. It's just a non sequitur.

That's also going to be a "problem", if you view it as a problem, no matter where it is held.

The demand for tickets so vastly outstrips the supply that it makes no difference where the NFL holds the Super Bowl. They could hold it in NYC or LA every year if they wanted, it wouldn't make attending the game any more accessible to the vast majority of the population. Furthermore, the NRL GF becoming an event of similar stature would only be a good thing for the sport.

Of course it will. Commercial reasons will make sure of it
If this was about commercial reasons then Sydney wouldn't effectively own the rights in perpetuity.

The commercial value in a moving grand final vastly outweigh those of one that stays put no matter what.

He just admitted the deal is on par with each other when you factor in stadium rental and $ offered, I am guessing they haven't given up going back to the table for Sydney stadium deals next year hence why they turned down Qlnds higher offer for 3 years. There is no doubt that open bidding would generate more cash for the NRL, but there's still stadiums to be sorted otherwise we are going to see some Sydney clubs left well behind in coming years.

$150 ave a ticket x 60k ( assuming rumours of 20k held from sale is correct ) is $9m

Sponsors/officals save on airfares

Likely means you clear $6m-$7m from the $8m hosting fee.

So lets not pretend that the game gets nothing from NSW hosting it
