At least Hepatitis C doesn't force you to write rubbish.

Playing an instrument probably does offer a technical advantage in terms of insight and informed opinions but music isn't always black and white; the fantastic thing is everyone can appreciate it on their own terms.

and although i recognise satriani as being infinately talented his sh*t bores me to tears and i would rather listen to noddy holder singing "we all get our kicks..playing in a rock and roll band..."

Which pretty much proves that technical skill as a musician does NOT equate to taste when it comes to judging music. Just because someone can play does not mean they can either write or judge music well. Although Satriani is far from the worst offender when it comes to vapid fretboard wankery.

millers is not "up himself"....millers would be up himself if he was an arsehole rockstar who treated people like sh*t and used the "don't you know who I am" line when he didnt get his way at the shop, nightclub, restaurant or whatever...I don't think its possible for millers to be as big an arsehole as, say, one of the arseholes from Jet or Billie Joe Armstrong.

If millers can nail and play a song just by listening to it a few times then good on him! I wish I could do it!

A similar thing could be said about coaching

Do you need to be a good player to be a good coach

Some good players have made bad coaches

Some music like the Pistols is pretty basic stuff but how successful were they and how rich did they become writing an perfroming basic 2 minute punk songs. Same thing as Blink182, most of us could put toghter a song similer to Blink, but they make big bucks and ours wouldn't get air paly.

So how do you define successful.

If a band plays what we call crap pop or punk songs and make millions out of it, it may be a tad confusing to some of us, but thats the music industry babe.

A lot of people who were into the Pistols, enjoyed blues, classical, jazz...all sorts music. It's not a mutually exclsuive thing.

That's because music is more than some tortured spotty teen muso wannabe, sitting in a locked room madly working out the chords to Stairway to Heaven.

Or some nerd writing "frightening verse to a buck tooth girl from Luxembourg".

Music isn't just about "musicianship". It's about humor, dancing, singing along, lyrics, and a celebration of the joyous sounds of pure pop.

When the rapture comes, it will not be accompanied by the voice of God surrounded by angels, but by the sounds of the American Breed singing "Bend Me, Shape Me"

In memory of Juan Phuckall. Funnier than a dead poddy calf!

hey i play well

i have been playing since i was 7 - 32 years!!

i can work out just about anything given a few goes and listens on the stereo

does that make my "opinion" on music superior to some tone death sex pistols fan?

does the fact i know gwen stefani cannot sing as well as sam brown make me superior in music knowledge?

i think it does

drill down and you will see that those who can actually stomache an entire sex pistols album are very limited

and limited to fans of fashion and not music

hole, death metal, rap, are other examples of people (fans of) who are not actually into the music itself rather the image and the fashion

hmmmm dunno about that.

I have listened to an entire sex pistols album on many occasions .

I also listen to lots of different music.

Sometimes I'm just in the mood to listen to that style of music.

although I don't listen to it anywhere near as much now as I did when I was 15.

Other times I will chill out with some Bob Marley.

I also like to listen to Billy Holiday and The Carpenters then a day later I will put on rage against the machine.
