musicians - are they up themselves

Mate, there are VERY few teenage boys that listen to death metal.

They spend most of their time listening to crap like Slipknot.

How can you have heard plenty of death metal yet have never heard of Cannibal Corpse? They're arguably the most recognised (although far from the best) DM band on the planet.

I'd suggest you're merely grasping at your own perception of what death metal is rather than boasting any genuine knowledge or understanding of the reality.

I find it humorous so many people try to bag out death metal when they probably have not heard a death metal band in their life. You must be confused with something else. Maybe Mudvayne or Slipknot, in that case, you are correct, they are sh*t.

btw Dismember (a DM band) were tops live last week.

It's ironic isn't it, given that Slipknot and Mudvayne aren't even metal bands.

Unfortunately I own albums from both but no, I didn't pay for them!

I don't think you can write off an entire genre because you've only heard a handful of bands within it.

But back to the original question, there are plenty of musicians who are right up themselves. I remember standing in the crowd for Nine Inch Nails at Big Day Out a couple of years ago, while two dipsh*ts in front of me were having an in depth discussion about how badly they sucked because of the brand of guitar they were using. Same thing happened a couple of years later while Janes Addiction were playing, this tool thought he was being helpful pointing out whenever a chord or beat was missed.

As someone said before, you're technical know how means jack squat unless you can actually create (not replicate) music.

That's ridiculous - I doubt there has ever been a live show played without a note missed here or there

I love these threads.

You guys take this stuff so seriously.

My genre is better than your genre.

Maybe a war one day over it all.

Actually I don't have a genre nor did I ever proclaim any genre to be superior to the other.

I was merely defending the merits of death metal against a person who wrote it off without any basis upon which to do so.

However, it's been a while since there has been a war so maybe that's not such a bad idea?

So Britney Spears is a musical genius?

BTW I'm not a huge fan of death metal either, just wanted to poke a hole in that argument.

Thankyou Samwise

Millersnose, by that logic you're also suggesting Jazz is crap. Is this correct?

They played Mark of Cain and Pantera on JJJ today ...are either of them death metal? or just metal.

I couldn't really pick the difference except maybe mark of cain was a bit easier to listen to.

In truth I would rather listen to the constant ringing in my ears than that stuff though.

i would say britney has outsold all those death metal bands put together

probably because she is more talented than all of them put together

Not even close to death metal.

I've never been a fan of Mark of Cain. I'd listen to0 them if I was forced but that's about it.

Pantera might bets be categorised as power metal. Not particularly heavy, in fact they used to be a c**k rock band back in the 80s before they added a thrashier element to themselves. They released three decent albums - Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power and The Great Southern Trendkill - then went downhill.

Last year guitarist Dimebag Darrell - now playing with his brother in their ne band - was shot and killed on stage by some lunatic. I guess that's what happens when you're from Texas!

But back to the point (sorry, I got distracted, haha), no they are a long way from death metal.

And by the way, I rarely listen to death metal myself - merely defending it against naivity.

Haha, funny stuff. You think Britney sells because she's talented? Shame on you young man.

Jazz sells? That's news to me - I can't remember seeing Bill Evans or anyone of his ilk in the charts in the past, ohhh, ever!!

what about "Eboli"...I have one of their CD's
a bloke in Jolly Rogers ( record store in Cronulla) gave it to me for free...

He should of paid me to dispose of it for him.

to deny britney is talented is quite silly

girl pop may not be your cup of tea but she does it well

oh?

many jazz artists have broken through on the pop charts

and the market for mainstream jazz is huge

this is not the case for death metal with only adolescent boys who like vampire music actually buying any of this crap

That's fallacious logic.

Millers argument is that bands have poor record sales because they are untalented, it doesn't automatically follow that you have to be tallented to sell many records. That is, lack of talent is prerequisite for lack of sales, but talent is not a prerequisite for many sales.

So we're basically saying DM bands are untalented? In fact, we're also saying that any band that struggles for sales is untalented. Now, that is the epitome of a ridiculous argument.

See, and now we're talking about mainstream jazz breaking into the charts - what about freestyle jazz artists. They'll never sell enough to 'chart' - do they lack talent too?

You're argument, Millersnose, reminds me of Swiss cheese

yes

otherwise they would be playing music not imitating washing machines

no

i am saying a genre that fails to appeal to a large enough audience to get proper sales has to look at its sound

most people i kwon are not interested in genres that sound unpleasant

we are talking about genres

benson was a freeform jazz player who alone would have outsold all your death metal bands put together

You're argument, Millersnose, reminds me of Swiss cheese

at least i have one

That's rubbish, there are many extremely talented artists that don't sell many records, and many that sell heaps. As there are musicians with no talent that either sell or don't. My argument was a statement like

"death metal is crap

a fact evidenced by its pathetic lack of sales"

has no base as sales are clearly not a factor in determining talent.
