National Reserve Grade

So
I would prefer to go in the opposite direction to a National Reserve Grade and gave an expanded NSW and QLD Cup. The NRL would take over junior development and the under 16, 18's and 20's will align with there NSW and QLD Cup counterparts. Every NRL team would only have its NRL side to worry about and would not have any junior teams.

For example every NRL team has a 30 man squad.

Under the NRL is the NSW Cup and QLD Cup

NSW Cup similar to QLD Cup in that it has a wide spread of teams across all (country!) parts of NSW (includes ACT for NSW and NT for QLD)

Players in an NRL squad not picked in first grade drop down to a Cup team. An NRL team can have as many affiliates in both cups as it chooses. Cup teams also have there own players on contracts to play for that cup team

NSW Cup and QLD Cup teams have an under 20's, under 18's and under 16's which filters through to there cup team. Dependant on finances there could possibly also be an under 22's

Teams from NZ, WA, VC and ADL also participate but for money reasons may not have a team in all grades so for example maybe only 20's and NSW/QLD Cup

There can also be standalone teams in the NSW and QLD Cup such as PNG in QLD and Fiji in NSW but also making sure teams such as North Sydney Bears and Newtown (equivalent for QLD) can maintain a presence in the Cup

where do Penrith RG players play ?

You can repeat this as often as you like, it wont make it true...

The fact is that if the State Championship sides are relegated to a 3rd grade, they will be seen as the dregs of the dregs (he players not good enough to make the comp for players not good enough for NRL).

A NRG limited to the 16 NRL clubs means we will just centralise the premium RL even more for no good reason. The State Championship is where the people pining for the days of Suburban RL and semi-pro/amateur players doing it for the love will actually get to see this.

Why restrict it to 16 locations that already have better options in stadiums/time-slots that only the hard-core section of the people already attending games will see them.

NRG limited to the 16 NRL clubs is honestly the worst of all options....

Problem is - NSW Cup and QLD Cup are already is seen in that light today

In NSW the 11 NRL teams plus Warriors are the NSW Cup. With 50% wearing club colours playing matches on game day. The other 50% are just NRL clubs wearing a different jersey

Bundy Cup had a good profile when it started

Only after clubs like Wenty, Mounties and Wyong were admitted to NSW Cup did that change

But we have seen clubs in NSW evolve away from the NSW Cup model with Penrith dropping Windsor, Canterbury dropping Sydney Bulls, Newcastle the Centurians., Wests-Tigers dropping Balmain/Wests/Ryde-Eastwood. With Newtown and Bears dropped by multiple clubs. Even St Merge dropped St George and the Steelers before rebadging their RG team to be the cutters

NSW Bundy/RM Cup if setup right will work

Personally I'd like to just see a National Reserve League played before the first grade, essentially just replace it with the 20s, maybe even get the NRL squads up to around 40 players.

As a fan if I knew a better quality game than the 20a was being played before the NRL one, I'd probably head to games earlier, especially if they were labelled as the Rabbitohs as opposed to the Bears.

As for NSW/QLD Cup and NYC, keep them as is, no reason why they couldn't, just have a different format.

NYC > NSW/QLD Cup > Reserve Grade > NRL

Something is going to replace the U20's on GF day. Wouldn't a national reserve grade take away from the state championship? Or is that where plant ion league north and south come in?

Anyhow. QLD won in 2014/15 in the state championship

wow.

NSW side finally wins this matchup and it's proof we need national reserve grade.

It wasnt just a win

It was how oneside the result was

This will only get worse as we expand to a full 36 man NRL squad and as more and more TV money buys the better players

NRL aligned clubs will have up to 17 full time players in one team against part timers with at most 4 to 6 players

NRL aligned reserve grade team destroying a non NRL club managed side in the final
Burleigh are aligned with Titans......Not sure what you are getting at. They are a better team than what was on show, bad day at the office for them. A close game every year is not guaranteed in any competition. As an avid watcher of both Qld and NSW cup there is nothing between them across the board.

Yes

but its about the spread

For example Cronulla is only aligned to one club - so all leftovers play with Newtown - eg possibly the whole 17 players being full time professionals instead of a maximum of 8 today

But in QLD Titans are aligned to 3 clubs so NRL fringe talents is spread - with say from next year 6 in each club

As salary cap doubles over the next 5 years in line with the TV deal doubling so will player wages of the NRL 36

While wages for the other players wouldnt change significantly

What this will do is increase the "gap" between fulltime and parttime players

In RL it only takes 3 below par players for the score to blow out to a 30 point margin

We are already seeing the effect of the salary cap on the ESL. The expansion to 36 full time squad members will have a similar effect on a local front

Siv, I'd like to see a national Reserve Grade comp too (meaning every NRL club has a Reserve Grade side with the same name and colours). There would still be NSW Cup and QLD Cup, but they would be third grade comps, and the NSW Cup could add teams from places like Coffs Harbour, Dubbo, etc. They could keep the Under 20's as it is. On game day, we could see the Under 20s , then Reserve Grade, then First Grade. That would be awesome!

So basically "Make RL even more Sydney-centric"....

The problem with liking Reserve teams to NRL sides is that you immediately limit where teams can go.

We would take the QLD participation down to 3 teams, no teams in Perth or Adelaide and forget EVER having a side in a country area.

The reason i support pushing the State Championship is because we can place teams wherever we want. The comp will mostly mirror the NRL anyway, but if there is an opening somewhere we havent handcuffed ourselves to a system that doesnt offer all that much benefit to begin with...

It offers absolutely zero benefit except the tiny number of people who show up to NRL games early can watch slightly older players running around than under 20s.

Meanwhile it will cost a fortune and destroy the qld cup. Richo's ridiculous blueprint made more sense than this shit.

Your assuming that Qld Cup will change

I dont see it changing with National RG

Also there will be no change to the State Championship

The change will come with doubling of the NRL salary cap and the expansion to a 36 man squad
