The 2009 American National Rugby League season is set to kick off this weekend, although it won’t be with a full slate of matches.
The Washington DC Slayers and the Jacksonville Axemen are getting an early start on Saturday.
It promises to be a competitive game as both teams made the postseason in 2008. Jacksonville (5-3) finished third in the standings, while the Slayers (4-4) finished in sixth place.
They met in the opening round of the AMNRL playoffs with the Axemen posting a 12-point victory, but that was then and this is now.
Both teams have recruited solidly in the off-season and each club will be looking to get off to a good start in 2009.
The season proper will swing into gear next week with eight of the 11 teams in the league hitting the paddock.
There will be nine rounds of regular season play, two rounds of playoffs and a national championship final in New York City on Saturday, August 29.
The league has expanded this year to 11 teams with the Boston 13s RLFC joining the fray. The new club takes its name from the 13 original colonies that founded America, as well as from the number of players who take the field in a game of rugby league.
Every club will have a bye at some stage of the season and one of the AMNRL’s main showcase events - War at the Shore - will feature five games on August 1 in Sea Isle City, NJ.
The New Haven Warriors are the defending champions having beaten the Aston Bulls in last summer’s Grand Final. It was the first time that New Haven had been there.
This could well be the last year of the AMNRL as we know it as there are plans in the pipeline to launch a newly structured national competition in 2010.
The National Rugby League USA is in its developmental stages. It is proposed to be an eight-city professional competition.
The NRL USA would be a single entity league, meaning owners would have a financial stake in the entire league and not just their own teams.
The league would be centrally run and would manage costs ranging from stadium rental, team travel and equipment to front office and player compensation.
Players and coaches would be paid salaries that would be determined by the league.
However, all of that is possibly in the future, what’s in the present is the 12th year of domestic rugby league in America and ARN will keep you up to speed on the season week by week so make sure to check back here regularly to get caught up on who wins, who loses and who’s in the playoff hunt.

All the best for the upcoming AMNRL season.

Interesting how they are now talking about the NRLUS. It has gone from starting in March next year to being only a possibility in the future. All the hype we heard a few months back seems to have been way over the top.

Before they get carried away in future maybe they need to get things in order first. Like having teams, coaches and players. What has gone on over there has made them look like amatuers.

That's written by a reporter for American Rugby News - not by an official.
He wouldn't know any more or any less than you do - so reading stuff into what he writes is just more deathriding from you.

Coach, you're really offended by the USNRLs inability to satisfy your curiosity aren't you...

roopy. I am not deathriding it. I would love to see it get up and running. It would be the greatest thing to happen to the game internationally ever.

DINGb@T. No I am not offended by the NRLUS failure to tell anyone let alone myself what is going on.

As I have said before and will say here again. You cannot be talking about the new competition one minute then say nothing for the next 6 weeks. What ever momentum the supposed new professional competition had 6 weeks ago has now gone.

Hey why not get a tipping comp happening for the Yankee rugby league comp

There was one a couple of seasons back but the results were a bit hard to come by. Spinner put up a couple of Jaxaxe shirts as prizes. The results are usually up to date on the ARN site now though.

it doesnt have any seating (the use it for all sorts of sports, and theres two fields), so im guessing they are going to bring bleechers down. its nicknamed the castle. turf field. so will suit the teams that are wanting to play a fst style of footy

I (on holiday from England) will be arriving in NYC on the morning of 29th (on a train or bus from Philadelphia), and will be aiming to get to the game - looks like a stunning location to watch a match.

I realised later that it's next year when I'll be in NYC. DOH!
