BELIEVERS is a new book by photographer Tobias Rowles with foreword written by Roy Masters. The book documents a cross-section of Australians unified in their belief and devotion to the St George Illawarra Dragons rugby league team.
Rowles' study represents these fanatical 'Believers' in an authentic and honest way. He offers an intimate insight into their private lives while collectively celebrating the colour and beauty of everyday life in suburban Australia. His work touches on the universal themes of passion, tribalism and the incredible power team sport has of bringing people of different backgrounds together.
Legends of the club, like Graeme Langlands, are represented alongside passionate everyday supporters. The work is a mix of personal and collective narrative- that charts not only the individual histories of fans and their passion for one of the most recognised teams in Australian sport, but also celebrates the cultural diversity that is modern Australia.
As Roy Masters reflects in the book's foreword on the highs and lows of the club, he ponders on the notion of belief-
"It is a curious loyalty that circumvents the other ties we have in life- to the politics and religion of our parents, the region of our schooling, the location of our jobs and the ties of the partners we marry."
Rowles' images capture this belief and the emotion and trust fans invest in their club. As well they speak to the significance sport plays in the lives of individuals as a means of personal expression, a building block for identity, a place to belong and a foundation for community."
