So turns out it was hardware acceleration in chrome's settings, my gaming PC handles it fine 'cause it dumps it off to the GPU and it's got plenty of headroom, keeping the ram usage minimal, my laptop doesn't. Turned it off, problem seems to be gone.

If not, I'll just download some more ram like Pou so kindly suggested

Deleting your Chrome profile file then restoring it usually works too.
