Lucky new stadium's called AAMI

Stephen McMahon From: Herald Sun March 16, 2010 12:00AM

MELBOURNE'S new $270 million "bubble" stadium will be christened AAMI Park in an eight-year naming rights deal.

The insurance giant has signed a multi-million-dollar deal for the
stadium, which will be home to Melbourne Storm, Melbourne Victory and
new rugby union side the Melbourne Rebels. But the stadium design does not allow AAMI's signs to be attached.

They will appear on adjacent stand-alone 18m towers. Three are planned;
two on the Swan St side and one overlooking the Yarra River. A spokeswoman for AAMI refused to be drawn on the exact cost of the
deal, but experts believe it could be worth up to $10 million.

Sports Minister James Merlino said adding AAMI Park to the sports
precinct would give the city an edge in attracting big sporting events. He said AAMI Park would be one of the world's finest stadiums to
watch soccer and rugby league and was "the latest addition to a first-class suite of sporting infrastructure that is the envy of any city in the world".

The first match at the 30,000-seat stadium will be a rugby league Test showdown between Australia and New Zealand on May 7.

NRL premier Melbourne Storm will play Brisbane Broncos two days later. Another game already locked in is the Australia v England rugby league international on October 31. AAMI is the major sponsor of racing's Victoria Derby and tennis's Kooyong Classic, and has naming rights to Adelaide's AAMI Stadium, home to the Crows and Port Adelaide.

That is a very good deal of they do manage to bring it in at $270mill.

Perth's new indoor entertainment centre is costing $480mill and rising!

ps hate it when more than one stadium has the same sponsor and therefore name, hope they are ditching the Adelaide sponsorship soon.

So our new stadium is AAMi Park, AAMI sponsor the refs... reckon we might go well in the penalty count at home this year! ;)

looking good

i know this has no relevance to rugby league but just a question would the Melbourne Rebels and the Melbourne Heart be playing out of this ground also?

Etihad would almost exclusively become and AFL venue with the moving of all other ball sports to this venue, only when a 50k+ capacity becomes necessary will RU RL or HAL look to hire Etihad.

be interesting scheduling for all teams as u can see when the heart play the victory u would think there would be a game every week for the a-league in Melbourne and when the s14 (soon to be s15) to start in the Feb i can see some slight scheduling problems around this period

Victory will play some games at Etihad.

Talking to a mate who works at the venue and he said the biggest time waster was the panels on the roof.

The Storm are having an open day for their members on the 24th. I'll be sure to take plenty of photos and post them later.

I thinl the stadium won't be completed in time. It will still open but ascetics like landscaping may not be done.

Victory are playing their big games (vs. Sydney and Adelaide) at Etihad still.

Rebels and Heart will use it exclusively.

I think also, Rugby tests when NOT tri-nations matches will be played there. The pattern is Melbourne usually gets a tri-nations test one year, and then a minor international the following.

They sell out Etihad and get 60,000+ at the MCG for matches against the All Blacks, but more like 25,000 for matches against countries like Italy or the Pac. Islands, so they will be moved to AAMI.

All in all, looks a cracking stadium. Can't wait to see it with the external LED's all lit up.

Went by the MRS on the way to Toyota Cup on Saturday. First time I have seen it that close up in a long long time and it looks very impressive.

Cannot wait til members open day! Hopefully we can walk the pitch!
