I think the term “rebuild” is an excuse to allow teams to be shit for a few years. Just look at the Cowboys. They turned it around in 1 year. When Bennett came to us, he made us a powerhouse in his first year.
Ah but I think Brownie did all the heavy lifting in the years before. As Bennett himself said, he just had to tweak the roster as we already had a pretty good team.
Cowboys are a little different. I believe their fortunes (and that of the Broncos) were benefitted from good junior development. I mean Payten only had to really bring in a good experienced half to get them moving forward. Same as the Broncos. They didn't go hard recruiting a lot of quality across the park, really their key signing was Reynolds. Both teams have been bringing through their juniors in the previous years successfully. And the fact that the QLD cup was allowed to play last year has been beneficial for a number of teams - Cowboys, Broncos, Storm etc. I mean that's why Payten went to the Cowboys - the junior talent and the way they have brought them through would have been a very attractive proposition for him. The whole production line has already been setup and maintained. He just had to tweak it (via Townsend) to get the best out of them. I mean they only had to sign 2 players in 22 to get the results. As a result they haven't had to sign anyone new for 2023 either. They've just extended a couple of existing contracts.
We haven't been very successful in junior develop for many years now and the KOE cup being cancelled for the last 2 years hasn't helped our position. And this is what I think Webb is trying to establish. We shouldn't forget that he's only been on board for a couple of years now - came on during the last year of McGregor. I think the CoE is a huge step in the right direction.
Panthers is a great example of what we should be aiming for. But it does take time to get the right structures in place.
