A couple of weeks ago I saw a list of players coming onto the market as at Nov 1 for 2023.
Dragons should take a serious look at this and approach them even though we need players for 2023.
According to Bennett and Gould, its Ok to target players signed long term as there is a good chance of upsetting them enough to get them released early.

Players listed included (players in bold would be great for our roster):
Farnworth, Flegler
Luke Thompson
Tapine

Will Kennedy, Ramien, B. Trindall
Fifita (GCoast)
Curran, Addin FonuaBlake
Klemmer
Nanai, Robson
D.Brown, N.Brown, S.Lane, Sivo
Leniu, Martin, Tago
Burgess, Knight
F.Baker, Keighran, Radley, Tupou
Douehi

The highlighted ones could indeed be useful at our club SGMax. Several will stay at the clubs they are currently at unfortunately but maybe one or two might be able to be swayed to come to us if our offers are high enough, which I doubt.

All I can say twinkletoes in response to your post is that our management for some reason take one step at a time (very slowly I might add) to plan the future. It has taken them ages to "maybe" get financial help from the State Government to have the C of E completed in say 2-3 years time.

I cannot see the Kogarah Netstrata Grounds being totally knocked down and new facilities being built on the site. I think Council owns it? So in this case we should look at say the Sydney Cricket Ground as our "St George" grounds and have the WIN Stadium upgraded over a few years once the C of E project is completed. That's what I can only think of anyway, others here might have other reasons?
Being an SCG member I would love it DD.

jeez, Tapine Linu, Martin & Thompson should be our targets but without any tricks up our sleeve in 3rd party very doubtful we will get them. Surely Haran must go to Young and say "I know it's not the done thing that we arrange TP's but cant you get WIN to pull some strings with their media sponsors to get things going , off the record of course , we need about 800k a year to secure at least 2 and possibly 3 of the above "

Dragons sign Charlie Leano!
4th tackle talks to Anthony Griffin; " Its really great to be able to break the announcement, we were in talks for a few weeks as hes currently playing in Group 14, I coached Charlie way back at the Hawks, his junior team in Rockhampton and he was a great player back then, the kind of player we need right now going forward, he was really good at catching the ball and running it up back then and still has that ability. He's a very important part of our plans for the next few years with guys like Mcullough leaving, thats a huge dent in experience so he will be good for the younger players like Woodsy and Burgess, Shereb and Coric are still 7 or 8 years off and im looking at being a career coach here at St George so understand how to bring them through." " Flashy play and winning games arent everything, were a work in progress and I aim to have us at about 12 or 10 next year with a possible aim of getting to 8th or 9th spot in 2024." " Im talking to Dave Shillington also for return, hes a good bloke and real role model and a former origin player, hes the kind of experienced player who never takes a backwards step and still has a lot to offer. I have my eye on bringing young Josh Mcrone back, whos been really going well over in Tolouse to play half for us for the next few years, guys like young Sullivan are still 3 or 4 years off so Josh knows the Dragons system well, im very excited about all these 3 new signings theres a lot of experience there. " 4th Tackle.

Just in, Hook looking to bring Sam Thaiday back, apparently he coached him when he was under 8s playing for the Rockhampton Rockets.
“Sam brings a wealth of experience and will plug a hole for us in the middle”
3 year contract with 4th year player option.

The thread title is 'New recruits for 2023'...

Who honestly gives a rat's about new recruits, when we have a coach that can't put together a consistent and effective game plan. When we have a coach that is responsible for an attack that continually dishes up unstructured garbage that resembles headless chickens running around a paddock.

I have to laugh reading some of these posts. Posts that seem to be offering up excuses for Griffin. Excuses for his recruitment strategy and excuses for what we've dished up on the field, which he is directly responsible for. People seem to want to make out that Griffin is paying the price for the last decade.

Give me a break 🙄

If we had a coach, like a Bellamy or Robinson, a coach that was capable of bringing structure in attack and defence, don't you think we would see an immediate improvement with the glaring issues that we have, especially with our attack? Sure we wouldn't be ladder leaders but i reckon we'd be playing finals football, and that, all of a sudden, makes us a much more attractive proposition to any potential recruits. With the style of football Hook has us playing, i doubt anyone would want to be part of our club.

And as far as Hook's recruitment goes, he was the one that went out and signed a broken down, 31 year old, tortoise to a three year deal. With the carrot of the three year deal, we could have enticed someone that provided much more than McCullough out of dummy half. You've only got to look at how much better we look when Bud is playing in that position and HE'S NOT EVEN A DUMMY HALF. But no! Hook knew who he wanted and offered the 3 year deal to get him down here. A blind man would have known that, with the way the game was changing, you needed speed in that position, yet Hook went out and signed the slowest hooker in the competition to a long term deal.

It was also been widely reported in the media that Hook wanted to re-sign Norman last year and we all know he tried to sign Israel Folau. How would that have been good for our juniors? Which of our promising kids would have stuck behind those two? The argument that Hooks recruitment was with the thought of not putting road blocks in front of our juniors is ludicrous.

Basically i think that, sure we had issues when Hook arrived, but far from fixing those issues, he's added to them the last two years. Anybody who thinks Hook is part of the solution and not the problem, is deluded.
We could reincarnate puff and put him in the centres and he'd just be given no room to move, like the rest of our edges and outside backs struggle with. He'd have no room to move because our coach is incapable of providing that room through attacking structure.

Talking about recruitment is basically a waste of time until the club does what needs to be done and moves Hook on. The sooner the better.

I thought he was the way to go. I endorsed him when the club signed him. I was wrong!

Time to fix that mistake...

Here I go again. The obvious people who got us into this mess are the members of the Dragons' Board. Not only did they condone the appointment of Hook but they also allowed to have him stay longer at this fallen down club.

Our Board members must be deaf, dumb and blind and gluttonous for punishment and most of all useless as administrators of the club. Why couldn't they see from 2021 that he did not have the answers and just let him coach for this year rather than sign him up for another year?

We could be hearing from our new coach soon instead of knowing that we are in for possibly another dud year.

They re-signed him before a ball was kicked and the argument put forward by the CEO, was to take out the speculation about Hook and who the coach will be in 23.

There has been nothing BUT speculation all year about Hook, so not sure it worked out as they had plan.

Another failure by the CEO and BOD.

theres endless truly laugh out loud comedy here, its worse than faulty towers....and I know were making jokes, but both the tragedy, and the irony is that literally, Sammy probably would still strike more fear into opposing packs than any of our forwards bar Jack and Block....

Just to be clear, they are off contract at the end of 2023 - so based on their existing contracts won't be available to join a new club until 2024. Unless of course, as you say, their current club releases them.

All the criticism re the Woods, Mybe, Moga, Burgess signings beggars the very simple question

If we didn’t sign them then who would have filled the vacant spots we had in the roster?

All well & good to criticise their form / playing ability or lack their of but in the end we had to fill 30 spots.

All this waxing lyrical about this one and that one and how we didn’t do this or do that the simple fact remains that we got what we got because that’s all we could entice to join our club.
Great Post, OT.

You might not pay attention to the hysteria on here too much, but if you did you would know that we actually have a whole squad full of elite talent who are all under the age of 20.

The only barrier to these super humans taking the place of the mbye's, moga's, Woods' and burgess' is the coach apparently.

It certainly has nothing to do with the fact that pathways have been dwindling at our club for at least a decade.

This thread is thoroughly pointless.
Who cares who we should or shouldn’t recruit or retain for 2023.
It actually makes no difference until we find a real coach.
Mate, thanks for your insight but as has been pointed out before, you were very happy with Mary as coach for the bulk of his tenure.

Considering this I wouldn't trust your judgement on who is or isn't a good coach and I wouldn't blame other forum members for doubting your credibility either.
