Stadium in doubt

Labor’s victory at the State Election on Saturday night probably puts an end to the possibility of a new world class stadium being built on the site of the Penrith Showground and Paceway.

And I’m told the whole project is likely in doubt – Labor have always said they were committed to the initial funding, but there’s plenty of people within both Panthers and politics who can’t see them knocking down the existing stadium and building a new one on the same footprint (which would barely increase the capacity).

Time will tell, and Labor will need to address this eventually. They’ll also need to order Infrastructure NSW to stop its negotiations with the Paceway if it doesn’t plan to acquire the site.

A 25,000 seat stadium in the current site would still be a big win. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good here.

Even if we built two new grandstands down each side and finished the ends at a later date.

Also it’s not just about capacity, it’s about weather protection, food facilities, toilets etc. lots of things can improve the game day experience. 25000 is more than enough

IMO the game day experience at Bankwest is pretty bad.

I give no f**ks about craft beer, food outlets etc when the leg space and seat width are considerably less than Penrith stadium. I'm tall and lanky and the new Parra stadium was not a good place to watch footy from a comfort point of few.

Fair enough, but most people aren’t tall.

Penrith needs more toilets, better food, more disabled access. I’d be fine with a 22500 seat capacity. If we could sell that out on the regular the club would be flying

Its not the future of the game but give me a hill with shitty turf and a Carlton Draught any day of the week. The fans have spoken, they want seats and $12 Stone Wood. Next they will want clean toilets!

Fangs will shed a tear if/when our ground gets demolished

For the $65 I paid to watch our reserve grade side beat the Tigers last tear I didn't expect to have sore knees afterwards.

I might be frozen and wet with only an Extra Dry for company in the western stand but my joints never hurt.

I've gone to see us play the Dogs there, thought it was okay. Similar to Etihad down in Melbourne, nearly indentical experience for me.

Thats an insane price.

Chris Minns has come out today and said no more than $300million will be spent on the Panthers Stadium!
Parramattas stadium cost 360mil.

If penrith can secure 300 mil than I assume they should have the funds to be able to make it work.

I have no idea how much money in assets etc the club would have but I'd imagine they should be able to find 100-140mil.

A budget of 400-440 should be able to deliver a world class 30,000 stadium that is even better than bank West.

One thing I'd love to see is a large tunnel that runs from the leagues club under mulgoa Rd to the new stadium.

Could be decorated in history and photos and have the Panthers theme music playing etc.

Would hopefully get more people to the club before and after the game and make it safer and more accessible for all people.

Would significantly reduce pedestrian traffic on mulgoa Rd too.

Hopefully some top shelf bars, food options etc too.

Building costs have risen significantly since Bank West now Comm Bank was completed. something similar now likely to be getting close to $500 million. If it can only be built on the existing site, then surely would have to look at acquiring Howell Oval and a new cricket ground being built elsewhere. I think the Paceway is in danger of losing out here, I don’t think there’s any chance of their site being redeveloped into apartments, commercial and retail. It’s a tough one.

There’s no way the club could afford to put $100m into a stadium, one they wouldn’t even own.

I’d support them contributing $20m or so, but that’s about it. Anymore and you’re risking the club as a whole.

Anyway, we don’t need a 30k seat stadium.
