Not at the professional level.
As usual you show your ignorance

in 1905 soccer was enjoying a huge boom in Sydney especially around Balmain

at the same time the vfl has established a competition in Sydney which was hugely successful. One club average crowds of 5k. The nswru was in a real fight against those sports

then the nswrl was formed and blew every other sport off the park in a few years and saved brisbane falling to the vfl

trust the nswrl buddy it’s shown over history

The rules were skewed in favour of Leigh

Leigh would e received ten million pounds over time as a super league club from the game

Toronto received zilch and had to pay for travel costs

then when covid hit got booted
If the game couldn’t afford them they should never have been admitted. Toronto accepted the scenario but when push came to shove, and covid was a key factor admittedly, they couldn’t sustain themselves as they were built on one source of revenue and when he stopped paying the bills and refused to fulfill their fixtures they were screwed.

Then they were given another opportunity to give SL assurance that the new owners could provide a sustainable business case and they refused to share the financial modelling, what did you expect SL to do? Just hope that history wouldnt repeat itself?

1905? haha .
Sport didn’t really become big business until the 80’s/90’s when pay tv started paying big money.
if soccer had taken off as professional sport became Mega business in aus then both Rl and afl would be minor players.
Look at the support international foootball gets, and jnr participation rates, if that ever got translated into professional top tier comp it’s game over for other Australian codes.

Nah wrong again

the nswru were able to build up significant assets

they bought the Harold park race course and we’re making huge profits every year

games like nsw vs nz were massive draws in Sydney

all sports took in gate money and we’re doing well

until the nswrl are obliterated them all

in the 1900s much of the north was rugby territory but the rfl didn’t establish clubs in the big cities and lost it to soccer

Haha in 100 years australian rl has managed to get a top tier club in one new city. Great track record! Now afl, 4 clubs in expansion cities. There’s a sport who looks to growth.
1. Sydney
2. Melbourne
3. Brisbane
4. Perth
5. Auckland
6. Adelaide
7. Gold Coast
8. Newcastle
9. Canberra
10. Sunshine Coast

RL dominates AFL in 7 of the 10 most populous cities in Aus & NZ. The support for the Lions and Swans are stagnate and the Suns and Giants are going nowhere fast (with no SL War on the way to give them a leg up). We just need to get better negotiators and lobbyists.

The reality for the top tier comps
NRL
1. Sydney - Dominant
2. Melbourne - growing presence
3. Brisbane - Dominant
4. Perth - ZERO
5. Auckland - Dominant
6. Adelaide - ZERO
7. Gold Coast - Equal presence
8. Newcastle - Dominant
9. Canberra - Dominant
10. Sunshine Coast - No NRL
11. Geelong - ZERO

AFL
1. Sydney - Strong presence
2. Melbourne - Dominant
3. Brisbane - Strong presence
4. Perth - Dominant
5. Auckland - ZERO
6. Adelaide - Dominant
7. Gold Coast _ Equal presence
8. Newcastle - ZERO
9. Canberra - Growing presence
10. Sunshine Coast - ZERO
11. Geelong - Dominant

So we have

Dominant NRL 5 AFL 4
Equal presence NRL1 AFL 1
Strong Presence NRL 0 AFL 3
Growing Presence NRL 1 AFL 1
Zero Presence (at top tier) NRL 3 AFL 3

You can see the difference lies in zero presence in two capital cities and AFL's strong presence v NRL's. NRLs zero presence is in pop of around 4.3 mill, AFL's around 2.2mill.

Warriors success ensures the active engagement of NZ.. we should be hedging that bet with another team.

It has to be done.

Obviously hasn’t. Don’t see many afl singlets when I go to the Goldie. As for the suns crowds (not knowing what they are) I can bet it’s all visiting Victorians escaping their winter for a holiday when their team plays

No, the reality is that RL is dominant in 7 of the top 10 markets by population in Australia. Dots on a map mean nothing if no one cares about the teams. The reality is also that we need to negotiate better and lobby Governments better to take advantage of our geographical advantage.

As with the Lions and Swans, you can that their crowds rely heavily on Victorian expats as they swell greatly when the big Melbourne sides play there (the drop off is dramatic when not relying on those big expat supporter bases). For the locals, it's RL all the way.

You'd have to have an extremely loose definition of "dominant" to call the NRL/RL dominant in Canberra. That's coming from a person from Canberra.

I'm sure that RU would having something to say about RL being dominant in Auckland as well.
Auckland shouldn't really be in the discussion at all if the analysis is as reductive as AFL vs NRL as the AFL has neither a significant presence in the NZ market and has never seriously attempted to break into that market (not in living memory at least). The NRL being dominant over the AFL in Auckland is pretty irrelevant to the competition between the two in the Australian market (i.e. where it matters) in the grand scheme of things, and only those interested in infantile dick measuring would suggest otherwise.

I'm not in a position to pass judgement, but I think it's at best debatable to suggest that the AFL and NRL are on roughly equal footing on the GC. Something tells me that there'd be much more fanfare on the GC if the Titans were going well than if the Suns were winning 'flags', but IDK, I could be wrong.
