I would have to say that the current popularity of the NZ Warriors probably makes a case against adding another NZ team to the NRL

It seems that RL fans in NZ are happy to support the Warriors when they are doing well.
Is there a big number of RL fans in NZ who just don't like the Warriors and are looking for another local team?

I very much doubt there is in Auckland. I would suspect a RL fan in Wellington or Christchurch would switch from a passive warriors fan to an active fan of the local club, you'd hope so anyway!

All blacks are 7AM and Warriors 6PM

I would kind of expect a regular season warriors game to out-rate the union in such a scenario.
ABs would probably still out rate a normal regular season warriors game even at 7am- but yeah, I think with it being a final you’d expect the Warriors to win the ratings battle this time.

People who don’t like the Warriors in NZ fall into two camps basically - people who hate league, and people who got put off the Warriors by constant disappointment. Some of the latter group won’t come back and would adopt a second team, particularly if they’re not in Auckland and they got a local team. And some Warriors fans would switch if they got a local side to support.

Hey if kiwis don’t want to wake up an hour early on a non work day for most to watch the all blacks then that says they aren’t keen

ive stayed up to watch the soccer World Cup in the morning when I used to like soccer

and what do you mean rl
in France isn’t the same level as nz ?
That’s wrong
I'm sure plenty will get up early for the ABs, I'm just saying that in this circumstance the warriors out rating them is the expected result IMO. I'm not sure why you are pretending that away international fixtures in bad time zones in any sport draw lower TV ratings than home ones in good time zones. How do you think the Kangaroos rate on an ashes tour 6AM local compared to when they play here at 8PM?

On what planet is RL in France as popular as RL in NZ in the context of their overall populations? In NZ, it is at least in the national consciousness and I will defer to people actually from NZ here, but my feeling it is on the 2nd tier of popularity under union and cricket. In France, I doubt a good portion of the population even knows RL exists and it doesn't make any top 10 list of sports in France that I can find.

pretty spot on. Union is #1 by a fair distance, then cricket, both of which are popular enough for “national game” status. League and Netball would be next, with Basketball and Soccer following.

It was a comment/prediction by Cameron George, the CEO of the Warriors, so let's not take it as gospel. I expect the live head to head figures to be different from the delayed figures.

As an aside with the rumours that SJ is out does anyone want to buy some overpriced tickets? ;)

haha, it wont be nz2 for club 18, why would I be?
It won’t be Perth either

International expansion is the way to go

have a look at the super league table

go on google and see where the first rlwc was and what crowds they got

even with Vichy it’s got a decent size. Before Vichy it has overtaken union in six years then union ran to the nazis and got it banned

I’m sure if a club union final outrated origin there would be union fans pointing it out

but when it comes to rugby league fans we shouldn’t point out our wins lol

maybe union is on the decline in nz and people prefer league in ever growing numbers

Not unless someone comes forward and actually wants to own a team it wont. You really think NRL will run a second NZ club itself?
They'll do exactly what they did in Brisbane- announce that the next team will be in nz.
Watch as the opportunity to own an instantly profitable international Rugby league brand brings bids out of the wood work .
These early bids are amateur, like bidding on a project before it exists...

Real bids- serious businessman are waiting for opportunities to present themselves.

The four brisbane bids were already known to the nrl pre announcement and they could be confident that one of them would be strong enough To be granted a license. I highly doubt they’ll announce a location without some level of confidence in who will likely bid. Of course theres always the bears!

Look at the Broncos.. Brisbane is completely wasted if they aren't doing well... another team hedges your bets in the city.
If the Warriors coming last, nobody in nz is watching.. but with a second team it helps insure the engagement..not just of a city but a nation!

For sure, theres lots of positives for nz2, but unless someone with deep pockets and great business acumen is willing to own them then it ain’t going to happen. And so far no one has come forward to do that.

Not at all, I’ve no problem if nz2 gets club 18, it’s proper expansion which I’m all for. Just can’t see it given a) no one at arlc has mentioned them as an option and b) no one is backing a bid opportunity,

pretty recent by Vlandys, when our premier gave him a call the first week he was in office.

Vlandys June 23 -
"Perth has to be high on the table now, especially with a premier so passionate about wanting to have a team there. They warrant serious consideration," V'landys told the publication.
“If you've got a government that's going to get 100 per cent behind you, you've got a run-up start. We had a really good conversation and we'll be chatting again. The fact he rang in his first week in the job shows how keen they are.”

Smartest thing i seen you post in a long while, that and the pool/conference unfairness regarding the 20 team comp... this is what you should be focusing on, not all that afl comparisons garbage.. phil gould is right on the money regarding comparisons, we aren't the same sport, we don't care what they do, on an oval, they use different athletes, and do things differently, none of which impacts league at all...
As for NZ2, no point is rallying behind a non existent bid... unless its the bears that are roaming the south Island
